BACKGROUND
Built by Noonien Soong at the Omicron Theta colony (ca 2336). Soong's fifth android of this design. (The first three were unsuccessful. The fourth, and first to be successfully activated, known as Lore, utilized identical structure but different programming.)
Mechanical, cybernetic and positronic composite with some biological components.
Body designed to resemble humanoid form, including functional respiratory system (largely to regulate temperature), circulatory system with active pulse (to distribute biochemical lubricants and regulate microhydraulic power) and other "lifelike" features such as (controllable) hair growth.
Contains approx. 24.6 kg tripolymer composites, 11.8 kg molybdenum-cobalt alloys, 1.3 kg bioplast sheeting. Cortenide and duranium skull. Polyalloy spinal support.
Programmed not to harm living beings, but capable of deadly force to protect others.
Programmed to develop through experience. His original programming included a dormant program to allow dreams, designed to activate at a certain level of the android's development. Original programming did not include emotions, but they have subsequently become possible through use of a chip designed for that purpose by Noonien Soong. Juliana Soong programmed him with a creative ability to help him express himself in the absence of emotions.
Used as repository for all memories of the colonists of Omicron Theta (before the colony was destroyed by the Crystalline Entity) and hidden in dormant state underground.
Discovered and reactivated by crew of starship Tripoli (2338).
Deemed a sentient being and permitted to enter Starfleet Academy (2341).
Graduated Starfleet Academy (2345).

SERVICE RECORD (HIGHLIGHTS)
Assigned to U.S.S. Trieste.
Assigned to U.S.S. Enterprise-D as Operations Manager (2363).
Returned to Omicron Theta Colony site, participated in discovery and reactivation of Lore.
Under the influence of a "homing device", Data was commanded to hijack Enterprise and go to the new secret laboratory of Dr. Noonien Soong to receive an "emotion chip" devised by Soong. Chip was not implanted in Data due to intervention of Data's "brother", Lore (2367).
Given temporary command of starship Sutherland as part of Federation blockade during Klingon civil war (2368).
Joined group of renegade Borg under influence of his "brother", Lore, who manipulated Data's positronic brain with signals that triggered negative emotions in Data. Data subsequently deactivated Lore (2369).
He has been decorated by Starfleet Command for gallantry, and is the recipient of the Medal of Honor with clusters, the Legion of Honor, and the Star Cross.

PERSONAL
Chief personal pursuit is his attempt to understand humanity and thereby develop his own human personality.
To help understand humans, he has played poker with computer recreations of Sir Isaac Newton, Dr. Albert Einstein and Dr. Stephen Hawking.
He has made active attempts to develop a sense of humor.
He once constructed an android daughter named Lal, who developed at a rapid pace and even showed potential for experiencing emotions; however she "died" after two weeks due to positronic brain failure.
He paints creatively.
He has a pet female cat, Spot, who gave birth to kittens (2370).
He self-installed an "emotion chip" (2371), created by Dr. Noonien Soong, which became fused into his neural net due to overload. He continues in the development and control of emotions.
