Nancy Boy
Don Hill's Niteclub, NYC
January 17, 1998

I saw Nancy Boy for the first time a couple of years ago opening for short-lived supergroup, Neurotic Outsiders. They were good then and even better now.

Don Hill's is an extremely small bar that should be the neighborhood hangout not have a gig stage in it. Dark lights, a video monitor, waitress service and nifty pictures on the wall completed the look of the place.

There are 2 superstar kids in the group, Donovan Leitch the singer (Donovan's son) and Jason Nesmith the guitarist (Monkee's Nesmith's son). Terry Fox is on bass and Mike Williams plays the drums round out the Nancy Boy band.

Ione Skye (Donovan's sister) and Kirsty Hume (model and Donovan's new wife) were both in attendance as well as a few other notables. There is only 20 feet for an audience space so you can see them rock out.

The band casually walked in, walked up to the stage area (just a little bit of floorspace actually) and started their set with an "hello" to the audience and the song "Ageing Machine".

It continued with a new song (per Donovan) called "Promoter Gone Sober", "Out of Order", one of their best released songs "Deep Sleep Motel", "Hollywood High", "Rosarita Beach", "Notice", "Pure Dead Simple", "Video Concert Hall", "Johnny Chrome & Silver", "Placebo Effect" and "Fox Trot".

One of the funniest parts of the show is when the animated Donovan as the part of one of the songs sings, "Do you love me? "Truly, Madly, Deeply?" (was he imitating Savage Garden?) The show was a quick 40 minutes or so, but the small crowd loved it especially me, right up in front. Cameras and audio tape were acceptable if permission was asked beforehand which made this a better time than a bigger name band.

Nancy Boy may take their name for a feminine type guy in UK, but they were having a fantastic time on stage, dancing around and talking to the audience. It showed considerably and the audience certainly appreciated the effort.

There is a good website at the Nancy Boy Web Page. Currently Nancy Boy is without a label and looking for a new one. Let's hope they sign a new deal, have a new CD out to hear some more good music.
