Reviews of
"Hidalgo" by The Four Bastards
It's the horse's name, not Viggo Mortensen's
Hot Chick: Zuleikha Robinson (except she's veiled about 95% of the time so it doesn't really matter)
Hot Chick Factor: 7
Synopsis -- The most famous long-distance horse racer in America is motivated by a $100,000 purse and some rude Arabians to race in a 3000-miler across the middle east. Not-so-subtle messages about "breeding," "race superiority," and "mixed blood" abound.
Short declaratory phrase in an attempt to get quoted in TV trailer, ad, or cover box --
"A rocking, rollicking, rolling, rallying, ratifying, ruminating, ridiculous ride through the Arabian desert!"
Nate's review:
This was not a bad movie. I am all about movies with a "Western" feel to thier cinematography. This is not a western, but it has the look of that milieu (think "Open Range" mixed with "Seabiscuit" mixed with the desert planet scenes from "Spaceballs" ["We ain't found shit!"]) There is an interesting expressionist alternating slow-motion-intercut-with-fast-motion technique employed early in the film when Frank sees an Indian slaughter that I would have liked to have seen later during a similar mental "episode" in the desert just for continuity's sake. (When you look at that word, "sake," do you first think to yourself the Japanese "sah-kee" or the English "sake" with the hard "a?" I have gotten to the point where I see "sah-kee" first. I guess I have been drinking too much... but I digress.) Still, I would recommend this film for those looking for a slightly cartoony action movie. The performances are laughable and overtly melodramatic, but I believe that was intentional given the overall feel of the movie, and therefore they work well in this context. I say go see it, then go drink some sake.
Rating: 7.5 out of 10 Western infidels
