Reviews of
"George A. Romero's Land of the Dead" by (one of) The Four Bastards
Hot Chick: Jennifer Baxter as #9
Hot Chick Factor: She looks good in real life, and is cute for a zombie, and we all like softball players, but-- still a zombie. -3
Synopsis -- Zombies, led by a former mechanic that inexplicably develops problem-solving skills on his quest to eat people, go after a city built and protected by Dennis Hopper's mob. Of course I'm serious!
Short declaratory phrase in an attempt to get quoted in TV trailer, ad, or cover box --
"These new zombies are fantastic! I'm loving them! They're smart, and fill their designated roles like the Marxist Village People! Hooray for the proletariat! I can't get enough of the overt socio-political symbolism inherent in zombie flicks! Down with rich capitalist pigs! Ahhh, not really."
Nate's review:
So I go to the gym yesterday, and there are all kinds of new hot girls that just joined. Yessss, lots of new hot girls... that I'll never talk to. But still. At any rate, George A. Romero's Land of the Dead, not to be confused with George D. Romero's Land of the Dead (where the zombies have an insatiable hunger for churros and cobb salads) is a zombie movie with a twist -- the zombies are smart, by zombie standards, whatever the hell those are (OSU?). Thus, the zombies are especially scary, or at least that's the theory. Of course, in reality, the whole thing is ridiculous, and quite funny at times. It also served some educational purposes for me for the next time I encounter any zombies, like that time I wandered into a Dollar General. For example, any kind of head wound is bad for zombies, save the naturally-occurring rotting of the face. Also, zombies love fireworks. I mean, they love them! Honestly, I haven't seen enough movies of this genre to make a comparison to them as such, but our boy Donnie Dorn has and he said it was good, so we'll go with that. Contrary to some of its forebears, this movie didn't really look or feel "cheap," which may take away some of the charm for casual fans, but it seemed that the hardcore at the screening had a good time. You'll know well in advance if you will enjoy this, so there you go. Fire it up.
Rating: 6.5 out of 10 diversionary fireworks displays
