Empire of the Ants 1977

Director: Bert I. Gordon

Starring:
Joan Collins, Robert Lansing, John David Carson, Albert Salmi, Jacqueline Scott, Pamela Susan Shoop

Sleezy, and I mean super sleezy, Joan Collins hauls a boatload of prospective home buyers out to an island under the pretext of selling some as of yet unbuilt homes to them.

Unbeknownst to the group there is a barrel of nuclear waste that has been washed up on shore and the local ants have been munching on it for quite some time. Naturally this causes some unusual mutations in the ants, like they get real big and real smart.

These ants are so smart that they start herding these losers up a creek like cattle to a small community that has a sugar refinery in it's midst. When they arrive there they discover the ants have a very sinister welcome planned for them.

Definitely not a classic by any means. Although it's watchable I think the writers put too much character into the characters. What we have here is one of the greatest assortment of goofballs ever assembled into one small cast. Only one or two of them are likeable and they rhyme off their lines as if they're reading them off the script.
