The Fly 1986

A totally new remake of the 1958 classic with that special brand of David Cronenberg gore. I find that it's actually closer to "Curse Of The Fly 1965" which was the third in the original series.

Jeff Goldblum is our nutty scientist in this one and he just keeps getting nuttier and nuttier.

We've got basically the same deal though. Jeff Goldblum builds a teleportation machine and has no problem transporting inanimate objects. But when he shoots a baboon through it comes out the other side a quivering, squealing mess. Turned inside out actually.

When it's finally perfected he decides to put himself through. Unknown to Jeff there is also a housefly in the chamber with him. Both his and the fly's molecules have combined within his body.

At first he thinks everything has gone well but soon realizes that something strange is happening to him. He begins mutating into a very strange beast indeed.

I saw this when it was first released and I have to admit that I didn't really think much of it back then. Probably because it didn't terrify me the way the original had when I was a kid.

But having viewed it a couple of times recently I have to admit that it's a pretty scary flick. There's plenty of gore although not a whole lot of action. One other thing I hadn't noticed before is that it was shot right here in Toronto.

Watch for: The guy who has his arm broken in half in the arm wrestling match is none other than George Chuvalo, long time Canadian Heavyweight Boxing Champ who twice went toe to toe with Muhammad Ali.
