Yeah okay, I know it ain't the greatest horror flick
to ever bounce onto the silver screen but it's dear to Punchy's
heart for two reasons.
One: It was my very first ever video rental. This was so
long ago that it was on a disc, no, not a compact disc, a
bloddy big 12 inch disc that was played like a record on a turntable.
Ah ha, I see you don't even know what I'm talking about.
They skipped and jumped constantly leaving the viewer missing entire scenes and dialogue. It was a horrible format
and only lasted a year or so. So much for the history lesson.
Two: Adrienne Barbeau owns a lighthouse in this movie and guess
what's on the top? Okay, yeah, yeah, there's a light on top. But guess what else is on top? A radio station. Wow, way cool. I can see Punchy
up there right now blasting out the oldies
in his very best Wolfman Jack voice. "And this one goes
out to Mrs. Kobritz who phoned in her request just before the
dead zombie ghost guy lopped off her head with a machete. Sorry
you can't hear it Mrs. Kobritz because you don't have ears anymore.
It's Bobby Boris Pickett's number one smash hit, The Monster Mash."
Okay, so I'm getting a bit off course here.
The movie starts off with this old sailor coot scarin' the
livin' hell out of some kids around a campfire by spinning a tale of
terror.
It takes place in Antonio Bay, California. The 100th anniversary
of a shipwreck is about to happen and this coincides with the town's
100th anniversary. Many festivities are planned and a good time should
be had by all. Whoops, wrong again.
You see the shipwreck was no accident, no-sir-eeeee.
This rich guy had leprosy and wanted to move his leper colony near the town. The townsfolk didn't think this
was such a great idea so they built a giant bonfire on the shore
leading the ship to believe they were heading toward the lighthouse
and the safety of the bay. Naturally the ship crashed into the rocks
losing everybody on board. Next day the good folks went out to
the wreck and ripped off all the gold. This loot was used to put
Antonio Bay on the map and build a new church. The rest of the gold
was forged into a three foot cross and hidden. The victims swore
to return in 100 years on a foggy night and seek revenge. I'd like to know how
this message was relayed to the townfolk since the victims were sorta dead.
The present residents have no idea of the true history of how the town
was founded and think everything's cool until the local boozehound priest finds
his great-grandfather's diary. His ancestor was also the town priest, although I don't know if he was a boozehound or not. But he sure was a murderer and the diary tells the whole morbib tale.
The fog rolls in and a bunch of zombified ghostly dead guys roll
in with it. They use scicles, meat hooks, machetes and swords to off the
citizens of the picturesque town. The zombie guys finally make it to the
church where the majority of our heros have congregated. They grab the
golden cross and hack up the boozehound priest. Now the fog rolls out
and the zombie guys roll out with it.
Check out Jamie Lee Curtis, she hops into bed with a guy
she met twenty minutes earlier. Janet Leigh, who plays Kathy Williams
in the movie, is Jamie Lee Curtis' real mother. She's also the gal
that got sliced up in the famous shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's Psyco.
