United Planets Spaceship C-57D is on a mission to the planet Altair-4 in search of a group of colonists that has been missing for 20 years... As they approach the planet they receive a radio message from Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) that they could be in danger if they land on the planet... The crew decides to ignore the warning and lands anyway...

After landing, the crew is met by ''Robby The Robot'', an amazing machine that drives Commander John J. Adams (Leslie Nielson), Doc Ostrow (WarrenStevens), and Jerry Farman (Jack Kelly) to the Moribus' futuristic home at about 300 miles an hour... While there Moribus tells them that some unseen monster has killed off the rest of the colony and only he and his lovely daughter Altaira (Anne Francis) survived... Naturally, the three guys go ga-ga over her, and of course she falls head over heels in love with our fearless handsome leader...

Moribus shows the boys around and explains that an ancient super race known as ''The Krell'' once inhabited the planet, but were somehow destroyed in just one night... He shows them a massive underground complex that streches for miles every which way... There is also a mind boosting machine which has elevated Moribus' I.Q. to super genius... Later Doc tries it out and dies in the process...

Meanwhile the ship is under constant attack by an unseen force that bumps off the crew one or two at a time... Later the monster becomes sort of visible as it comes in contact with a force field that has been set up, and it's big and it's mean... They then learn that the creature is called ''The Id'' and was created from the expanded sub-consious mind of Moribus... Now the problem is to see if they can destroy this creature before it destroys them...

Many consider this film to be the best thing to emerge from the numerous sci-fi movies of the fifties and I really do like it, but there are a few flicks kicking around that could challenge for the title... The effects were created by ''Disney'' and are for the most part great, especially ''Robby the Robot'', but I find that the film lacks in suspense and the acting is only fair... My main problem is in the comedy which is about as dumb as it gets... One of the crew members tries to teach the lovely lady, who has never seen a man other than her father, how to kiss... Gimme a break! Then the goofy cook (Earl Holliman) with a hillbilly accent, gets the robot to brew him up 60 gallons of booze and gets bombed... Personally, I could have done without the comedy relief...
