Frankenstein Unbound 1990Directed by: Roger Corman Starring: If you remember the TV shows "Knightrider" and "The Time Tunnel" and also the commercials for "The Clapper" Then you'll feel right at home with this flick. Joe Buchanan, a scientist in the year 2031 invents the ultimate weapon. However, one of the side effects is that it has created a time rift in the form of a purplish cloud in the sky. He and his wonderous talking car (Knightrider) get sucked into it and wind up back in 1817. (The Time Tunnel) There he meets Mary Shelley and Doctor Victor Frankenstein. Mary hasn't written her book yet but the good Doctor has created his murderous monster. A young girl is accused of witchcraft in the monster's killings and is hung. He spends a few days there driving around the countryside and mingling with the above mentioned luminaries. Joe ends up being forced to help Frankenstein reanimate his fiance who has been killed by the monster. Just as they finish the job they are all scooped up by the rift and deposited into the very distant future. (Time Tunnel again) The fiance commits suicide and the monster knocks off Doctor Frankenstein. The creature takes off across the barren wasteland to some kind of an underground power station. Joe follows him there and we get to be impressed by some fancy devices that spit out static electricity, like the things you see in the hippie stores. Joe does battle with the monster using some laser beams. He claps and a beam focuses on the monster. Every time he claps another beam comes on. (Remember those Clapper commercials?) Finally, the beast falls and Joe walks off toward some futuristic city in the distance. Raul Julia as Frankenstein and Nick Brimble as the Monster put in very
good perfomances. John Hurt is a bit dry but passable. I thought the
picture was moving along just fine until the ending where they're
all transported to the future. Then it went downhill rapidly. It
could have been a lot better with a more innovative finish. Oh well,
it is typical Roger Corman.
