Gorgo 1961

Sorta like Godzilla with a British accent.

A salvage ship is anchored in an island harbor off the coast of Ireland when "SOMETHING" almost capsizes the vessel leaving it disabled in the water. Joe and Sam go ashore to a less than friendly welcome from the Harbormaster. This is where you'll first meet this nerdy little kid but don't start complaining yet cause you're stuck with the whinny little shit-disturbing twerp for the whole film.

Joe and Sam realize that the Harbormaster has a fine stash of treasure that he's been lifting from sunken ships in the harbor. They relieve him of some of his goodies as payment for ridding the area of a bothersome 60 foot sea monster that has to be a close cousin to Godzilla. They haul it off to a circus in London where it is put on display and called Gorgo after the Gorgon.

Soon after this an even bigger monster comes outta the sea and gives the island a good shit stompin' like it deserves. This new monster is the little monster's mommy and it's hard to tell how big it is cause it's really, really big in some scenes and just really big in others. But I'm just nit-picking.

So Mommy starts heading for London. Time to load up the stock footage of the Royal Navy in battle exercises. Lots and lots of depth charges and lots of cannon fire all to no avail. There's quite a lot of this but it's actually used to good effect. Some hot shot geek in the British Admiralty assures everybody that Mommy will not make it to England. Sure pal, in your dreams.

Mommie does make it to London and nothing can stop her. Not tanks, not fire, not four million volts of electricity and not even rocket launcher trucks that couldn't hit the broad side of Grand Canyon. Onward she comes, crushing everything in her path. She knocks over Big Ben and a part of Pickadilly Square very convincingly. Naturally we have the citizenry running through the street in a terror stricken panic. I guess you could put this one in the "Cast Of Thousands" category. Finally she finds baby Gorgo at the circus and the two retreat back into the sea. In this scene as they depart baby Gorgo barely rises above Mommy's toe. This would make her about a thousand feet high.

This isn't your typical British sci-fi flick with everybody standing around in the local pub swilling back beers while the world goes to hell in a handcart. The miniture sets are good and everthing looks fairly realistic with the exception of debris falling on the crowd which is obviously superimposed.

So if you like Godzilla and his friends you should like this one.
