I Still Know What You Did Last Summer 1998Director: Danny Cannon Starring: I don't mind a bit of character build-up in a film. It allows us to pick out the characters that we want to see get their brains sucked out and the ones we want to live happily ever after. Too much build-up and it becomes padding. And padding is boring, especially in a horror flick. The first part of this film suffers badly from this problem. We're here to see some horror, so let's get to it guys. What we have here is just four whiny yuppie kids acting like four whiny yuppie kids. Finally, somewhere around halfway or maybe even later, things begin to pick up and we actually get to see some long awaited action. From then on it's pretty well non stop. The kids win an all expense paid trip to an isolated island in the Bahamas. When they arrive they are told that it's the end of the tourist season and the start of storm season. And hey, what luck, there's already a storm moving in to give us the necessary lightning and rain to provide atmosphere. This, plus the fact that the ferry only stops by every few days, gives us the feeling of isolation. Julie, survivor of the original flick, is still having nightmares of her first experience. Now she's convinced that the slasher is alive and well and on the island with them. Of course nobody believes her, but they should, because we all know he's there. The slasher guy starts knocking off some of the more insignificant cast with his hook hand. There's one nerd that I really wanted to see bite it, he gets done in with a pair of hedge trimmers. Beauty. You'll know who I mean the minute you lay eyes on him. The slashing and mayhem carries on at a good pace
from here to the end. There's a couple of mild surprises
kicking around to pick things up a bit, but overall, this
one's not nearly as good as the first. It's okay as a middle
of the road horror flick.
