PLOT
A Spielberg Classic... The New England beachfront town of Amity is
preparing for a big influx of party animals for the biggest long
weekend of the summer... However, there's a mean old shark hanging
around town too, and he likes munchin' on anybody that dips their
feet into the water... The Chief of Police wants to close the beach
but runs into opposition from the Mayor and local business people...
They figure that the tourists will leave and take their money with
them... So they offer up a reward to anyone that can bring in the
offending shark...
After a young kid is plucked right off the beach in broad
daylight, the Police Chief calls in a shark expert... The expert
arrives just as a small shark is brought in... After examining the
sharks stomach contents, he declares that this is not the right
beast... He then performs an autopsy on a previous victim and
declares that the shark they are looking for is a Great White and it
probably runs 20 feet long or better...
Now into the mix comes Quint who is a very strange dude... He
offers to capture the shark for a bundle of cash... So Quint, the
expert and the Police Chief head out to sea...
After a bit of cruising, they finally find the monster... They
harpoon the sucker a few times but it's much to strong for them to
hold onto... The shark gets a little pissed off at being harpooned so
he decides to eat half the boat and swallows Quint as desert... The
Chief finally blows up the beast and our two remaining heros float
back to shore on some debris...
There are some truly frightening scenes in this film right from
the start... A woman swimming late at night is grabbed and dragged at
about 30 miles an hour before being pulled under... And the shark
eating the boat is a pretty unforgetable experience...
For months and even years after the release of this movie, some
people wold not go near the water... Every single shark attack in the
World became a major news event... And the previously unknown Great
White shark became a celebrity... Magazine articles, cartoons and
even songs were written about this giant fish...
The shark was actually a giant robotic creation that looked very
real...
Jaws won three Oscars and spawned several sequels, none of which
came close to the thrill of the original...
