Meteor 1979

A blockbuster cast in a not bad movie that includes: Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Brian Keith and Henry Fonda amoung others.

A comet hits a five mile wide asteroid sending it hurtling towards Earth along with many small pieces that have broken off the main body. The only possible solution to save the world is to blow it to smitherines with nuclear weapons. The Americans have such a device floating around in orbit but cannot admit to it since it goes against nuclear peace treaties. Besides, it doesn't have enough punch to knock out the asteroid by itself.

But it seems the Russians also have one of these suckers in orbit that they won't admit to either. Finally the two sides get together and decide to co-operate. The rockets are launched and the world holds it's breath waiting for the outcome.

In the meantime we get to see some fair special effects of a Swiss ski resort getting buried by an avalanche when a small piece hits a mountain. Then Hong Kong is devastated by a 100 foot high tidal wave. New York's turn is next as it is hit directly by a fragament. Although some of it is stock footage of buildings being imploded by demolition crews it's still pretty good. Well at least for it's time anyway.

This leaves our heros stuck in their underground control bunker. They escape through subway tunnels just as the Hudson River comes crashing through the walls.

Although I was never a big fan of those dumb disaster flicks of the 70's, I don't mind this one.
