Nightfall 2000It said on the cover that this story by Isaac Asimov was voted the best Sci-fi story of all time by some society or other. How could I pass that up? So even though I know very well that a great story does not necessarily mean a good movie, I went against my own rule: If the video store only has one copy of a brand new video, it probably sucks. That rule still applies. The planet Aeon has six suns which never set, so nobody has ever experienced total darkness before. The inhabitants know that every thousand years some kind of plague of insanity breaks out and almost the entire population is destroyed. There are two factions on this planet: The Watchers, a fanatical religious group, and the University of Scholars, which of course approach everything from a scientific viewpoint. The two are constantly at odds with each other. When the world goes dark, due to an eclipse of one sun, the folks go nuts and set fire to everything. The Watchers decide they will kill all the Scholars and anybody else that they encounter. Two of the main characters survive. It has cheap 50's effects and the rest has the feel of a cheap 70's TV movie. I'd stay away from this turkey if I were you.
Some Of The Dumb Stuff....There are six suns around this planet and the eclipse of only one causes a total blackout. The other five just don't seem to be around when the eclipse happens. Why does a total eclipse cause the entire planet to go dark? The heavenly body that passes in front of the sun doesn't seem to be large enough to do this. Watch for the guy that's covered with fire, you will plainly see he's wearing fireman's headgear with a glass face plate when he comes out of the fire. When the village is viewed from a distance it's obviously a miniture. A bad miniture. And the
fire in the school cannot be mistaken for anything other than gas flames. I could go on. But I won't.
