The Man From Planet X 1951American newspaperman and our hero, John Lawrence, travels to the Scottish island of Burray for the scoop of the century. Planet X has come out of nowhere and is heading straight for Earth. Already there, in some kind of ancient fortress, are Professor Elliot, with his lovely daughter Enid, and Dr. Mears, who is soon to become the power mad evil scientist. John believes Mears to be a crook and lets it be well known that he dislikes him immensely. Poor Enid is driving through the foggy moors at night when she has a tire blowout. She leaves the car and begins walking when she comes across a spaceship. She looks through a portal and sees a hideous face staring back at her. She runs back to the fortress in terror. Enid and the Proff head back out to the ship where the old geezer is hit by a beam of light and becomes a bit of a temporary zombie. Later the spaceman shows up at the fortress and is invited in. Nobody can figure out how to communicate with the being. Mears asks to be left alone with the spaceman and finally gets through to him. He wants to keep all the secrets for himself for all the usual reasons. Mears then attacks the being hoping to gain full control of him by regulating his breathing tanks. Unfortunately that doesn't work too well as the spaceguy grabs Enid and disappears back to the ship with her. Up until this point the creature seemed friendly. But now things go a bit differently. The being now digs in and gets ready for a fight with a little help from some local villagers that he's zombiefied. The village cop shows up, and I couldn't understand a damn word he said, looking for the missing men and is informed of the goings on but is skeptical at first. Scotland Yard and the army are both called in. John goes back to the ship to try and free the missing zombiefied people which he does. Mears runs back to the spaceship just in time to get blown away along with the ship and the being. Everybody now turn their heads toward the heavens to see Planet X head back out to deep space. Once again the world is saved. Although it's not exactly action packed, it has lots of spooky atmosphere thanks mostly to the foggy moors even though all the far away shots are obviously minitures. The creature is one of the most bizarre looking aliens I've ever seen. How's this for some cornball dialogue? |
