The Dark 1994Director: Craig Pryce Starring: Be very wary in graveyards at night, especailly in Toronto. There's a new creature roaming the cemetaries. Well, actually, it's kind of old, dating back to the Jurassic Period, or so we're told. It tunnels around various graveyards munching on the recently departed. But it's not too proud to chow down on the odd live person. Actually, it's a big fat rat creature. There's two guys on the trail of the beast. One is a rogue FBI agent hell bent on killing it for eating his partner, the other a scientist who wants to capture it alive. The scientist believes that the creature contains a fluid that would be very beneficial to the medical community. These two guys hate each other. While digging a grave two somewhat goofy workers notice that a headstone disappears into the ground. Next day they return to fix it but it's miraculously back in place. They then discover tunnels underneath the graves. Two cops are called in to investigate the problem. One goes into the tunnel and doesn't come back out. Now the two guys that hate each other show up. The good guy jumps into a coffin and is placed in one of the tunnels to try and attract the rat creature. It works, a bit too well though. Just as the creature is confronting him the bad guy shows up and starts blasting away. There's more, but you'll have to find that out by yourself. This flick was shot in the Toronto area. One scene was filmed at the seedy Canary Restaraunt on Cherry Street. A waterfront eatery where Punchy has slam-dunked more than his fair share of bacon and eggs. A few original ideas help to make and keep this one interesting. The creature was a real letdown though. Thankfully we don't get to see much of it. Neve Campbell plays a dorky female cop a couple of years
before she shot
to fame in the Scream movies. The older of the two grave diggers
is a real hoot, too bad he buys it near the end. Overall we liked it,
especially since it doesn't take itself too seriously.
