The Day I Entered the X-Files

                 Written by: Tara Angel

I sat on the couch eagerly waiting as the commercials rolled. It was 8:58
p.m, Sunday night. People had always teased me about my obsessive love for
the X-Files. But who could blame them, I talked about the show constantly,
had posters all over my room, and my net name was ScullyClone. But still,
my friends understood, they too had obsessions over their own favorite
shows. My pal Stephanie was totally mesmerized whenever "Dawson" graced her
t.v screen, and my boyfriend Justin could recite every name on the South
Park credits. So, I guess the fact that I won every X-Files trivia match
was on the same level of freakiness as their own "conditions." My family
thought I was "strange" and obsessive over "an unimportant thing" such as
the television. My dad would constantly tell me, "t.v isn't the most
important thing in life Crystal, why can't you be normal like your
siblings?" Of course, he was a little off there, my sister Tanya sang to
Backstreet Boys on her hairbrush, my brother Stephen enjoyed roaming the
house in nothing but a pair of boxers and a jockstrap before baseball. My
little sister Polly wouldn't go anywhere without her Tinkiwinki teletubby
doll. When I told her Tinkiwinki was gay, I was grounded for a week.
Luckily for me though, my best friend Gillian was just as obsessed with the
X-Files as I was. Ironically, her first name was the same as Gillian
Anderson, the talented woman who portrays agent Dana Scully on the X-Files,
and even more ironically, her initials were G.A, Gillian Adams.
I couldn't even express how grateful I was that there was a long weekend
ahead of us. My dad would never let me have a friend sleep over on a school
night, let alone have someone over until ten o'clock at night watching the
X-Files, and then go to school the next day. I looked over to Gillian who
was sitting impatiently on the couch cushion next to me. I glanced over to
her and we both traded an excited squeal. My whole family was out on
different outings, and I was finally alone with quiet, my friend, and the
television set. When the Fox commercial appeared, my eyes lit up in
excitement. "Last time on the X-Files...." Finally!!!!! I squeezed
Gillian's hand tightly, and glared zombie-like at the t.v. Suddenly, my
look of excitement, switched to a look of fear as I stared into the
television screen. I could feel Gillian's hand on mine, squeezing mine
fiercely. I could see an identical look of horror on her face. I wasn't
looking at her though, I was looking straight into the television set. I
looked into my own face as though it was a mirror image, as though someone
was videotaping us. Was someone in my house? Was somebody videotaping me?
Suddenly I could feel tears streaming down my face. I grabbed Gillian's arm
in fear. I was afraid to move. Either that or I wasn't able to, I couldn't
really tell. Before I could attempt to stand up, I was overcome by a
blinding flash of light. As I lost my grip on Gillian's arm, I began to
scream in ultimate horror, thinking of all the X-Files scenarios, and how I
was living one of my own. I could hear Gillian's cries for my help, being
partly drowned out by a horrible buzzing sound. Suddenly everything was
quiet. I opened my eyes, and looked around. I was in a bedroom, unlike my
own. It was simple but classy, and very clean. As I sat on the hardwood
floor, it suddenly came to me. I couldn't believe what I was telling
myself, but when I looked down My mind overpowered me. I stood up, and
threw off my suit jacket as if it were cursed. What had happened to my blue
sweat pants and Cowboys t-shirt? I pulled a few strands of hair away from
my face to realize that they were freshly cut to a short bob, unlike my
usual beyond shoulder-length layered do. My final surprise came when I
glanced down at my chest. I was no longer the "flat chested" girl in the
ninth grade who was often teased playfully by my guy friends. I was a full
developed grown woman. I shrieked in disbelief as I turned to see myself in
the mirror. Just then, I heard moaning coming from the other room. I
slowly opened the bedroom door and peered into the living room. I could see
a pair of tired legs peeking out from behind the couch. I ran towards them
in joy.
"Gillian!!!" I screamed. I ran towards her and wrapped my arms around her
neck.
"Oh my god!!!!!!!!!" She shrieked in disbelief, "Oh my
goddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"It's me!" I shouted, "It's Crystal, your friend Crystal!!!!?
"Oh god, OH god, Oh god!!!!!!" She replied.
"I know!!!!!" I shrieked back, "I don't believe it either!" I pulled
myself away from her and looked at her face. She gave me an awkward look.
"Is it really you in there Crissie?" I nodded and smiled. "Can I touch
you?" She said in a strange way. She looked me in the eyes and then
reached forward and poked me in the arm. She started to laugh. "Cool!!!!"
She exclaimed. I echoed her laughter in a famous tone, but then my mind was
stuck on the though of our situation. My smile faded to a frown, as did
hers.
"What happened?" I asked frightened, "I mean, what's going on? How can
this be?"
"I don't know," she frowned, "I'm scared." She looked at me with innocent
eyes. "But this is pretty damn cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she said with an
awkwardly serious expression. I reached out and pulled her towards me
again.
"Aren't you supposed to be Gillian Anderson?" I whispered into her ear.
"Yeah.." she replied, "But I guess you are supposed to be Scully." I held
her in my arms without really noticing. My own voice strange in my head,
which of course wasn't really my own.
"But Scully isn't a real person, she's a fictional character." I muttered.
I was suddenly startled by the shrill sound of my cell phone ringing. I
loosened myself from Gillian's grip and reached into the pocket of my black
trench coat, which was draped neatly over the top of the couch. I pulled it
out and looked at it in my hand. It was completely surreal. Of course, it
was just a cell phone, but it was Scully's cell phone, and the name
displayed across the tiny screen made the sight even more frightening. I
gawked at it unbelievingly. At rang a second time...and then a third...
"Answer it!" Gillian squealed. It rang a fourth time.
"What?!!!!!!! No!!!!!"I screamed back!!!! "It's not mine!"
"Yes it is!" She urged as she grabbed it from my hand and pressed the on
button. The ringing was silenced.
"Uh...he..hello?"I stuttered nervously.
"Hi, it's me. Where are you? You were supposed to meet me an hour ago."
"Uh..ah..uhh..." I mumbled.
"Scully, you okay?" Mulder questioned concerned.
"Ummm..Can you hang on a sec? Yeah, hang on." I said stupidly. I pressed
the mouth piece against the palm of my hand and spun my face towards
Gillian. "What do I say?" I exclaimed, "I'm talking to Fox Mulder, what
the hell am I supposed to say to Freakin' Mulder?!!!!" Michelle lay down on
the couch. She looked at me strangely.
"Say something Scully would say." She responded cluelessly. I could feel
the skin above my nose begin to wrinkle.
"Thanks a lot!" I shot back at her sarcastically. She shrugged her
shoulders. Obviously she wasn't as tense as I was. I sighed with grief and
slowly proceeded to pull the phone towards my face again. Before I said
anything a just held it up to my face.
"Scully?" He said innocently. I suspected he had heard my breathing "You
alright?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. I'm just a little....I slept in this morning. Sorry, but
uhhhh..my rental car won't start, it's uhh....broken. Yeah. You
wanna...come and pick me up?" I said. After I realized what I had asked
him, I bit my tongue. I could see Gillian's face out of the corner of my
eye, her jaw dropped.
"Sure" he said, " I'm just surprised you haven't called a cab already.
Well...anyway, I'll be there in about 20 minutes." He hung up without saying
goodbye. I could feel my hands begin to quiver, and I dropped the phone on
the floor. Gillian looked at me curiously, as I stared out into nothing, my
face flushed.
"I turned to face Gillian who was sprawled across the couch.
"Have I ever told you that you make the worst fucking Scully that I have
ever seen?" Gillian snickered.
"Has anyone ever told you that you swear too often?"
"Sorry mom." Gillian replied. You are such a dork!" She added trying to
keep a straight face! "Ah ha ha ha ha! I just called Gillian Anderson a
dork! Go figure!" she laughed. Crystal straightened her white blouse with
a smug face.
"How the hell can you not be as scared as I am? She shouted.
"Ooh! Hell is a bad word Crystal!" Gillian scolded.
"Hell is not a bad word Gill! It's...Oh, who cares about that anyway, stop
trying to answer questions with questions!" She screamed. "Anyway, I have to
go change. Mulder is picking me up in about 15 minutes." There was a long
pause. Then.. "AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!" They both screamed in excitement. We
suddenly found ourselves in a non stop choir of screaming, fallowed by a row
of loud bangs coming from the tenants above. I looked at Gillian and began
to laugh....Then scream again.
"AAAAAAHHHH!!! I just talked to David Du...Fox Mulder!!!!!!!EEEEEEEEE!!!"I
shrieked. Before I knew it, we were both on our feet jumping up and down.
"He's coming to pick me up...HERE!!!!" I screamed adding to the excitement.
Suddenly we both stopped jumping. I planted my feet on the ground.
"Ohhhhhhhh, he's coming here? Oh god!!!! This can't be real!! Pinch
me!"Gillian squeaked. I pinched her arm tightly. "OWW!!!" She squealed.
"We are not dreaming, I shouted, this is real. But how can that be?"
Suddenly a thought occurred to me. "I gotta get ready! He's gonna pick me
up in 15 minutes!" I exclaimed
"What? 15 minutes?!!!!!"She screamed as if she hadn't heard me the first
time. Without answering her I spun towards the bedroom and began rummaging
through Scully's closet. "You mean you're actually going to work?" Gillian
called from the other room.
"Well, I have to." I shouted back as I continued to explore through the
endless hangers of clothes.
"Yeah, but I mean you don't know the first thing about being an FBI agent."
Gillian yelled. I walked out and approached my bewildered friend. I held
up a pair of jeans for her to see.
"Did you even know that she owned a pair of these" I asked excitedly, "Ha!
I think there's also a mini skirt back there, come and see!"
"It's okay," Gillian began, "I'll look in a bit, I'm so tired."
"Okay...but you're missing all the fun!" I exclaimed.

Gillian grabbed the television remote and began to surf through the American
channels. About 10 minutes later, I returned to the living room to my very
shocked friend.
"Oh my..." She whispered.
"Take a look at the new Scully." I said cheerfully. Gillian stared in
disbelief at my blue jeans and black tank top completed with black eye liner
and grey eye shadow and burgundy lipstick. The red hair one side of my part
was held back stylishly with a single bobby pin.
"You cannot go to work like that Crystal!" she informed me, "You can't!!!
You wouldn't!!"
"Exactly," I replied smugly. Gillian looked confused. "I'm not going to
work, me and Foxy are going shopping!" Gillian reacted with a surprised
look.
"You are kidding....there's no way!!!!" She exclaimed. Suddenly, the
doorbell rang. "He's really here!!!!!!" she screamed, "he's a real
person!!!!!!!" I nervously walked towards the door. "Wait!" Gillian
shouted back at me, "where's your cross?"I turned to her and felt my neck.
"I"m Jewish." I replied disappointingly. I turned towards the door and
reached for the handle. Turning it, I pulled it towards me. Suddenly my
eyes widened at the beautiful sight. He stood there in the doorway,
handsome as ever......his pouty lips like a dream....just for me! Suddenly,
his face turned.
"Scully....wh...?" He questioned, one eye brow perking upwards. Before I
could say anything stupid, Gillian saved me.
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Oh my god!!!!!!!!!AAAAAHHHHHH HA HAAA!!!!" I guess
it wasn't quite a save, but it worked.
"Who is that Scully?" he asked in confusedly. I smile eagerly through my
stained lips.
"I know it's a little...different, but I think it's a nice change, don't
you?" I asked avoiding his previous question. He didn't answer. He was too
busy gawking at the sudden change.
"Hello," Gillian called over from the couch, "How are you today mister
Mulder?" She asked with a half-wave.
"Who is that?" Mulder asked again.
"I'll explain it all on the way to the mall." I replied as I reached out
and touched the arm of his clack trench coat.
"The mall?" He bursted, "Scully...what's going on?"I began to smile at the
thought of me actually touching him, and he looked at me awkwardly, trading
glances from my face to my hand. I quickly pulled my arm away and held back
a childish grin.
"Don't worry,"I said assuringly, "Just wait for me downstairs? Kay...I'll
be right out!" I said to him. Mulder staggered into the hallway and I shut
the door behind him.. I was suddenly overcome with deja vu as me and
Gillian jumped up and down with excitement. "I'm outta here!" I shrieked.
"Wait...What about me?" Gillian asked innocently. "Why do I have to miss
out on the fun, what am I supposed to do here?" She questioned angerly.
"I don't know....just, find something to do. I'll be back before dark....I
think.." I shouted back at her as I ran into the bedroom once again, and
looked around. I spotted my purse on the night table beside Scully's bed
and grabbed it. into the narrow hallway.
"Bye!" I shouted as I ran into the hallway. I found the elevator and made
my way down to the lobby. Outside I could see Mulder's car waiting in front
of the building. As I approached the car, I opened the door on the
passenger's side and stepped in.
"Hi!" I greeted him cheerfully. He looked at me strangely.
"Would you like to tell me now what the hell is going on" He asked
suspiciously.
"Hmmm?" I hummed as if I didn't understand.
"You know what I'm talking about!" He shouted, "The clothes, the
excuses....who was that young girl in your apartment?" He urged.
"Can't a girl have a little fun for once?" I asked with an innocent smile.
Mulder sported a suspicious expression. My smile turned to a frown. "Okay,
you want to know the truth?" I sighed, "I just feel like doing something
different for once, being spontaneous. I mean, I can't just fallow every
rule all the time.......you don't"Mulder's eyed widened at the accusation
but then returned to their original form at the realization that the comment
was true. "Mulder..." I began again, "I know everything....everything in
the world. Well, at least your world."
"Scully, What are you talking about?" I raised my hand to my mouth thinking
about what I had just mistakingly blurted out. I sat quiet for a few
seconds. Oh great, now what was I going to do? I decided to go for it
since I had already gone too far.
"How do you expect me to be honest with you when all you ever do is lie and
keep things from me? I said as though I was really Scully. Mulder looked
totally surprised. I brushed a few strands of auburn hair out of my face
and swallowed in preparation for what I was about to say. "I believe you." I
whispered looking down at my lap.
"What?" He asked slowly
"I believe you." I repeated switching my gaze to his blue eyes.
"About what?" He questioned curiously."
"Everything!" I admitted, "Every single one of your theories, about every
single god damn thing you have ever raved about. Every Alien,
Monster....Freakin' government conspiracy. Any one of your lunatic stories
that I would easily dismiss from my mind...I believe every single one."
"Scully..." Mulder began quietly.
"You had a vaccine to save Emily." I interrupted abruptly. Mulder stared
at me in shock. "You asked me if I would spare her life if you found a
vaccine, and I said no. But I know you had it.....you looked at it in the
hallway just after you left the room. The smoking man offered you a job but
you didn't take it....you switched bodies with a man named Morris Fletcher
at area 51, and he wanted to have sex with me pretending he was
you...okay....you risked your life numerous times......You saved me when I
was in this green tube thing....I was....naked...."
"How could you know...?" He asked with a glazed look.
"I could tell you more if you'd like." I stated nervously.
"How did you know?" He repeated again. I didn't answer his question. I
cleared my throat.
"I also know that you love me." I stated confidently. Mulder's face
suddenly lit up with an uneasy glare. "..and you were really on that boat
in the Bermuda triangle, and Spender was a Nazi, and Skinner....And I
punched you in the face!" I exclaimed as I reached out to embrace the side
of his cheek where he had recently been belted. He was too astonished to
say anything. "And, I know that this would usually be the hardest thing for
me to say normally, but...." I couldn't hold it back, he needed to know.
Even though I wasn't the real Scully, the fact had to be revealed. Our
gazes united as one and I spoke softly. "..I love you too." Suddenly this
overwhelming feeling came over me, and I drew myself forward, pressing my
lips against his. I thought to myself that I had drawn myself backwards,
but in reality I found myself still indulged in the tender kiss. Suddenly,
illusion became reality as I felt the force of his lips react to mine, and
we were passionately kissing. I felt different, gentle, I wasn't me.....I
was Scully. Instantly, memories of past childhood experiences with
brothers, and a military dad rushed towards me. Memories that I had no
recollection of ever experiencing on my own. They weren't my memories, they
were hers. Prom night, and riding back on the fire truck when a friend had
accidentally let a bomb fire get out of control, the Christmas night I
received my golden cross as a gift from my mother, the day I arrived at the
FBI academy, and the disappointed look on my parents faces, the shame they
took opon my actions. I was overwhelmed with sudden knowledge into the
realm of science, my thesis, Einstein's twin paradox, I could recite it if I
wanted to, but for now I chose to concentrate on the warmth of Mulder's
body, his fresh shaven face against mine. Suddenly, there was a flash of
light and I felt myself being thrown from Mulder's arms. I screamed, but
was drowned out by a high-pitched shrieking noise, I called for Fox, and
Gillian, and everyone I knew, but I felt cold....alone. I closed my eyes to
block out the blinding rays, only to find that my eyelids wouldn't shield me
from the harsh light. I screamed horribly into endless nothing, and finally
everything was quiet. Soon the silence was ruled by a consistent nagging.
"Chrystal!!!! Wake up Chrystal! We're home!!!" I sat up and looked into
Gillian's reassuring eyes. I hectically visually scanned the room with glee
and utter relief, and pulled Gillian into my arms. I held her as a giant
grin crossed my face. At that moment I heard someone talking....it was the
television. I turned around and stared into the set. X-Files was still on,
and I couldn't believe what I saw. Scully and Mulder were kissing
passionately in his car, but suddenly Scully pulled herself away from him, a
shocked expression on her face. She smiled as she looked through the
windshield, and I could swear she was looking straight into my eyes. I felt
myself connect to her somehow. Gillian stared at me and then back at the
television, clearly she felt it too. Scully then looked back at Mulder.
They sat silently for a few seconds, and then Scully forced her body towards
his and they began kissing again. Me and Gillian started cheering wildly as
music began to play and the first credit appeared across the screen.
"That was me!!!!" I screamed, "I was kissing him, this is all because of
me!!!" Gillian's jaw dropped instantly.
"NOOOOOO!!!!!!" she screamed in disbelief. I nodded my head and we hugged
again. Suddenly without thinking, I ran to the telephone and began dialing
my friend(and next door neighbour) Katie's home number. It rang twice and
suddenly I heard the sound of her excited voice on the other end.
"Did you see that?!!!!!!!!!!" She screamed into the mouthpiece.
"Of course" I yelled, "I had front row seats if I may say so!"
"What?" She responded confusedly.
"Never mind," I said as I felt Gillian tugging on the arm of my Cowboys
sweater, "Did you tape it?" I squealed, "my t.v was..uh.....messed up." I
looked at Gillian, biting my lip to keep me from blurting out the whole
story.
"Well...yeah...but.."
"Kay, I'm going to walk over to your house in fifteen minutes to get it,
bye!" I blurted.
"But.." I slammed down the phone and the two of us decided to have another
round of screaming and disbelieving laughter.
"Screw 15 minutes!" Gillian hollered, "Let's go now!" Excitedly we both
ran towards the door. As Gill flung it open and ran onto the lighted patio
I glanced back at the television screen.
Suddenly as the 10-13 logo was about to grace the screen, something
surprised me. Across the screen were the words Thank you Chrystal.' I
huge grin spread across my face as I heard the adorable sound "I made this"
"Are you coming?" I heard Gillian call from outside.
"Yeah, I'll be right there!" I shouted
"Kay." As I was about to close the heavy front door, I was shocked by
another surprise. I felt my neck where I was feeling some discomfort with a
prickling feeling. I instantly found the problem, and held it dangling in
my hand. I unclasped the little gold cross and carefully shoved it in my
pocket. Suddenly a feeling came over me, and I realized the purpose of my
travel to the X- Files. It was my job to let Mulder feel love, the type of
love he could only receive from one person, and I had achieved it. After
that day, no one ever believed our story, so I decided to write it down on
paper for everyone to read. It was hard to find a way to begin my story
properly, but I had an idea.....

I sat on the couch eagerly waiting as the commercials rolled. It was 8:58
p.m, Sunday night. People had always teased me about my obsessive love for
the X-Files. But who could blame them.......
