Bon Appétit DESSERTS - COOKIES
RECIPE NAME:  APPLE BARS

PREPARATION TIME: -
 INGREDIENTS:
- - CRUST -
3/4 cup butter -
2 cups flour -
1 cup brown sugar packed
1/2 cup quick cooking rolled oats -
- - FILLING -
6 cups apples peeled and chopped
1 cup granulated sugar -
1 cup water -
1 teaspoon vanilla extract -
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon -
1/4 cup flour -
 
DIRECTIONS:
  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Place butter in small saucepan and melt over medium heat.
  • Pour into large mixing bowl.
  • Add flour, brown sugar and rolled oats.
  • Mix with a fork or pastry cutter until completely combined and evenly mixed.
  • Reserve 1 cup of mixture and set aside to sprinkle on top of bars later on.
  • Grease a 13X9 inch pan and press remaining mixture into pan.
  • Spread chopped apples over crust.
  • Place granulated sugar in small saucepan.
  • Add water, vanilla cinnamon and flour.
  • Cook over medium-low heat until thickened, stirring while cooking with a fork or whisk.
  • Pour mixture evenly over apples.
  • Spread reserved 1 cup of sugar-oat mixture on top.
  • Bake in preheated oven about 45 minutes.
  • When done, remove bars from oven and set pan on a wire rack to cool.
Notes - Comments:  You can also try substituting 6 cups of chopped rhubarb for the apples.
