DIRECTIONS:

Cook beef in shortening until lightly browned.

Add onion and garlic, cook until onion is tender.

Stir in flour, salt, sugar, basil, pepper and oregano.

Mix well.

Add tomato sauce and mushrooms, stir.

Simmer to thicken and blend flavors (about 15 minutes).

Cook potatoes in water with the 1/2 teaspoon salt until they are partially
cooked.

Drain. Layer 1/2 of the potatoes, meat sauce, and cheese into shallow 2
quart casserole dish.

Repeat to use remaining ingredients.

Bake in moderate oven until potatoes are tender (about 30 to 35 minutes).
