THE LATEST
- The Jordan
Lund Website has lots of
interesting information on Mr. Lund (alias Dr. Batung)
and his accomplished career as an actor and teacher.
Jordan tells us that he recently completed a webmaster
course and coded the site himself.
- This encyclopedia is being updated as you
read this. Terms and topics from episodes 1.4 through 1.7
will be added within the next 30 days - as soon as all
the tape can be reviewed and replayed many times.
- If you wish to be notified when this site
is changed use the free Netmind service. You'll get a reminder email with a
quick link as long as you wish to be contacted.
- Michael Leddy has
written a thoughtful, detailed, and positive review of
the show and the actors.
- Laurence Hatch, your
editor has written a review of Alexandra Wilson's
performance as Dr. Dru Breslauer. It also includes a
little predictive fiction on what Season Two might have
been like.
- If you have a favorite character from
Mercy Point and would like to speculate/fictionalize on
their future write us at newplants@angelfire.com. If you'd like your idea published here or
linked let us know. MERCY POINT IS MUCH TOO GOOD TO
FORGET.
- If anyone has an video screen captures
(freeze frames) from the show please let us know. We're
looking for good quality JPEG images to use here and with
certain reviews.
- UPN aired episodes 1.4 through 1.7 (the
remaining unshown four) on July 8 and July 15, 1999. They
were shown as a 2-hour long feature as part of the
Thursday Sci-Fi Movie feature.
- All the episodes were shown on European
Sci-Fi Channel in Spring - the last four being viewed
before the North American market got to see them!

INTRODUCTION
What is MERCY POINT? There's no shortage of opinions and good
guesses about future episodes. Some say it's ER in space. So far
that seems right on. The cast and crew seem up to those standards
at least. Others predict a 23rd century General Hospital. UPN's
spots say they're 'the sexiest collection of doctors in primetime
- not to mention the galaxy' reinforces the futuristic soap
theme. Some of the cast members do have a soapy background - 6+
years for Wilson alone. Still other folks say it's merely a
thinly disguised Star Trek: Mercy Point (STMP). The last view is
perhaps supported by one of the UPN's own promo spots that called
it 'Deep Space 9-1-1'. Hardcore sci-fi fans already have filled
the chat rooms with comments that it rips off this novel or
another. You can read those if you care to.
By all accounts the show is very much inspired by Trey
Callaway who both produced and wrote the first episode. It was
originally billed as Nightingale One; a name which was mercifully
excised. By some media reports Callaway wants MP to be more
bloody and realistic when compared to those pristine, tranquil
Trekian medical rooms. So far they are making this distinction
stick.
On the gender front what we do have is three female doctors
very central to the story and a female nurse android. However the
closed captioning referred to Dr. Haylen Breslauer as 'Nurse:' in
episode 1.1 - so the old biases are not entirely gone. Haylen,
Dru, and ANI are clearly cast and written to be a very sexy team
and that doesn't seem to please everyone. On the other hand,
Nurse Tobitt exhibits hard work, competence, and professionalism
with nothing more than good acting.
The show has also been spun in the media as being the first
medical drama with an African-American doctor truly being in the
lead. Already there are already some murmurs about him portraying
a dysfunctional black family; but one can accurately say the pale
Breslauer clan is not entirely normal either. Dr. Rema Cook, an
African-American woman, is portrayed as a very accomplished
scientist whose Dru admires. She and Dr. DeMilla seem to be the
doctors with the least baggage so far. Lieutenant Salasaw,
another woman of color, makes her appearance in command of a band
of mostly white males and having a prominent white male doctor as
a beau. Also on the interracial theme is strong tension between
Grote and Haylen which Haylen's date (Steven) mentioned to her.
No matter how the show develops these racial and interracial
associations are going to get attention from many fronts.
Trek and Babylon fans will enjoy the mix of aliens and humans
and all the humor and tension those working relationships
provide. Early reviews suggest Mercy Point is likely to gather
some award nominations for the alien makeup and effects if for
nothing else. Batung has already immerged as a fascinating
character worthy of careful development.
The October 3rd TV Guide ad headlined the show as 'Saving the
universe one lifeform at a time'. We can perhaps expect more of
the interesting species-specific medical fascinations that the
Star Trek series only began to explore.
Overall the show has high potential and has demonstrated
superb standards in both acting and production. The characters
are genuinely interesting but will the public pick them over
those on Spin City and Felicity? Maybe not, so the show probably
will need to move at least once.
Can a balance between the Star Trek formula and evening
medical soap be fine-tuned and kept steady over time? Yes, but
the mixture of first rate technology and romance is never been a
very easy one. If that balance can be acheived some have asked:
Should a sci-fi-soap hybrid be attempted? Yes again. It will
broaden the show's appeal and perhaps finally we'll have
something that both men and women can watch together without
compromising too much. We think they've got the ideal team to
accomplish it with plenty of fun, intrique, wizardry, and
believable emotion.

What are we trying to accomplish here with this site? The
enyclopedia format will present information in topical,
alphabetical order for easy retrieval.

(1.3)

ANI (Android
Nurse Interface)
- ACTOR: Julia Pennington.
- ROLE: A bright blue-eyed 'perfect' nurse android - a sort
of feminine, medically trained Data. She is technically a
Simbot.
- Recently promoted to Head Nurse in Episode 1.1; much to
the dismay of the human nursing staff.
- Seems to be unable or unwilling to recognize human
sarcasism.
- TEMPERATURE RANGE: can tolerate -200 to +800 degrees
Celsius.
- EMOTIONS: Cried real tears (1.2) and seemed to show
embarrasment when praised by a doctor (1.2).

Ansley,
Zachary

operate on Peter Reese (1.2). The term may refer to them

humans.
- RACE/NATIONALITY: Shenn.
- A 'helluva cutter' according to Grote and brilliant by
all accounts.
- Has a trunk-like lower body (mermaid form) with
tenticle-style arms and fingers which he tells Haylen
must never be called 'hands'.
- Skin is spotted and his nose appears to have only one
nostril.

Haylen Breslauer whom she has not seen in 3 years at
beginning of MP. The Sony/Columbia TriStar site says Dru
left Haylen in 2233 or 16 years before the current

the intervening 13 years. We'll bet this comes up soon...

- FATHER: never saw him (1.2).
- Haylen and Dru are born 5 years apart.
- Former girlfriend of C.J. who apparently left her (2239).

likely more to her past than bad relations with her
sister and CJ.
- Was formerly in rehab. We don't yet know for what.
- Seems worried about her psychological evaluation which
which may underly her past. Our guess is that abandonment
by both mother, C.J., and to some extent Haylen may be a
root cause.
- Expressed admiration for Rema Cook whose research linked
the temporal lobe to spirituality. (In real life the two
women share the same last name)
- Asks for a truce with both Haylen and C.J.

- Mr.
Showbiz.
- NY
Post.
- Aside from the forementioned formal reviews dozens of
chat room comments have appeared since the first episode.
Those in the sci-fi community were perhaps 80% negative.
Criticisms centered around the believability of a
computer virus infecting humans, derivations of plot from
Trek or B5 shows, soap opera like lines, and the form of
alien species. The more biting lines include such things
as 'What's the Point?' and 'Let's have a Mercy killing'.
Still a few feel the show needs time to show itself as
distinct from others and develop the alien characters as
more than just curiosities.
