David Hayward

David came to town around Thanksgiving in 1997 to reclaim his ex-lover Dr. Allison Doyle who had by that time fallen into mutual love with Dr. Jake Martin. Both Jake and Allie knew David from Stanford Medical School, where David was a professor and head of cardiology. When Allie rejected him, David set on a course to get Jake out of the way. He framed Jake at Pine Valley Hospital by giving stroke patient Adam Chandler the wrong medication almost killing him. David arrived "just in time" having noticed the error and administered the correct drug, "saving" Adam. Jake was suspended from the hospital.

Jake and Allie knew it was David's fault and set out to prove it. To save Jake's career, Allie joined forces with local TV station owner Liza Colby and Stuart Chandler. This motley crew set David up to believe that he could get Allie back if he helped Liza kill Adam for real so Liza could be with her "true love" Jake again. All David had to do was come to Adam's home and inject a sedated Adam with the same lethal medication he'd used on Adam before. Liza had Scott set up a hidden camera to record the event, hoping to capture evidence that could save Jake. Stuart posed as Adam, and Jake substituted saline solution for the deadly drug. While David refused at the last minute to kill Adam, he did confess to giving Adam the wrong medication in order to ruin Jake's career. The crew enjoyed telling David they had his confession on tape. David admitted that he administered the wrong meds by mistake. Jake was cleared and David agreed to resign. David left town for several months.
