Vanessa Bennett

Vanessa, Dr. David Hayward's mother, arrived in Pine Valley a few weeks before the car accident that temporarily scarred Erica's face. David was nearby when Vanessa suffered a heart attack and did NOTHING to help his mother, disappearing as Joe Martin came by to help Vanessa. It quickly became clear that there was no love lost between David and his mother.

David soon learned that Vanessa was broke having lost her fortune to a string of young lovers. She hoped to re-connect with David. She claimed for love and his help with her heart condition, but he was quite sure it was only for money. David finally accused his mother directly of being responsible for his father's suicide and told Vanessa she was a monster. Vanessa lashed out by pointing out that David was responsible for Erica's tragedy. David lashed back that Erica is ten times the woman and mother that Vanessa ever was or will be. On that note, Vanessa decided to tell Erica the truth about her face. Vanessa made it appear that she was Erica's only true friend because she was the only one willing to tell Erica the truth.

Out to make some money, Vanessa began a project with Donald Steele to write a tell all book about Erica Kane. Vanessa became close with Erica and even finagled an invite to live with Erica, all the while giving Steele slanderous details about Erica's life for the book. Janet and Trevor, looking out for Erica's best interest, managed to expose Vanessa.
