Be Our Guest
It was a Tuesday afternoon. The guys were out on the beach hanging out. Davy Jones was trying to improve his already impeccable golden brown tan, Micky Dolenz was practicing on his surfboard, Peter Tork was building a snad castle and while Mike Nesmith picked out a tune on his guitar.
The phone rang. Mike looked up. No one moved.
"Is anyone gonna get that there phone?" He asked. No one answered. "Well?"
"I can't I got to turn in a minute. Get a little sun on me back." Davy whined.
"Micky?" Mike looked at the surfbound Monkee. He seemed to be in a world of his own. "Peter?"
"I want to get this castle for Princess Gwen done before the tide comes in." He said with a smile.
"The tide doesnt come in this far Peter..." Mike muttered to himself. "I swear you guys are the laziest bunch of ahhhh..." He grumbled. He ran into the house, careful not to trail any sand in. "Hello?"
"Hi this is Melvin Schwartzy." A guy with a cigar in his mouth said. "Owner of Schwartzy Playland."
"I've heard of it." Mike said. Peter came in to get a drink. The others shortly followed him.
"Whos on the phone?" Micky asked in a miming jestture. Mike held up finger, just a second.
"We're gonna have weekly entertainment." Melvin said. "I saw one of your flyers. Thought I might give you a call."
"Yeah?" Mike asked getting excited.
"Wanna have a gig?"
"Sure!" Mike said. The others looked at him.
"Come down tomorrow afternoon at 1." Melvin said. Mike wrote the time down. "We'll give you a try. If the kids like you, and I like you, then we'll talk, capiese?" He said.
"Yes, sir, definately sir." Mike said hanging up.
"What was all that about Mike?" Micky asked.
"We have a gig tomorrow!" Mike said.
"Wow, thats the first in like forever." Davy said.
"I know!" Mike said.
"Where is it?" Peter asked him.
"Schwartzy Playland." He said.
"Say what?" Micky asked.
"Schwartzy Playland." Mike said.
"Mike do you know what that is?" Davy asked.
"He asked me that too, but I said I did, only I don't." Mike said. The others grumbled. "It's only a try out. If it works out, it will be a regular gig for us."
"Gee." Micky said. "I didn't think we would sink this low."
"What?" Mike asked. "Do you guys know something I don't?" The others looked at each other. Maybe it would be better if he found out tomorrow. "Come on guys, throw me a line, here." Micky tossed in a reel of fishing line. "Very funny Mick!"
Across Town
A young lady got off a bus at the corner of Wilmont Drive. She quickly went to get her luggage from the buss driver who was getting it from the luggage compartment of the bus. He handed it to her and got back on the bus. The woman was sorta tall at 5'9, with long brown hair that cascade down over her shoulders. It flopped into her face as she picked up her bag. She stood up and her hair flew out of her face.
"Meredith!" A voice called. She turned. "Hey!" She called. Her best friends Janine and Stephanie were sitting on a bench.
"Howdy stanger!" Meredith said as her friends left their seat to greet her. They hugged each other tight.
"How are you?" Janine asked. Janine had black curly hair.
"Yeah, tell us all about college on the east coast!" Stephanie chimed in, Stephanie had blonde hair.
"I have so much to tell you." Meredith said as she walked over to their car, ancient looking woody. "The northeast is like a whole other country."
"Well you can tell us all about it tonight. We don't have to work tonight." Janine said as they got into the car.
"I need to go home first, and get unpacked." Meredith said. "Alex hasnt rented out my room has he?"
"He claimed he had some offers from some supermodels." Stephanie laughed. "But no, I think he left it alone."
"Great." Meredith said. "I also need to get a summer job."
"I know of one." Janine said.
"Thanks, girl, but I'm not gonna gut fish for your father all summer. Remember the haddock incident?" Meredith said.
"I know, you fell in, and it took a thousand showers to wash off." Janine said. "But this is the real deal. There is a new place in town I think you will love."
"Whats it called?" Meredith asked.
"Schwartzy Playland." Janine said. As Meredith started to say no way, Stephanie cut her off.
"Its not as bad as it sounds." Stephanie said. "I work there. It's a little fun house thing, with skating and games and stuff."
"And probably guys running around in costumes, looking like forest creatures?" Meredith said laughing. Stephanie didnt join in on it, which confirmed her worst fear. "Oh my god."
"Don't worry, they got enough people for that." Janine said. "We'll take you over tomorrow."
"Ok." Meredith said. "Tomorrow is good, by then this will all sink in."
"At least its job." Stephanie reminded Janine as they stopped at her house.
"Right. Like anything dreamy isnt gonna happen there." Meredith said. "Meet a guy?"
"Worst things have happened." Janine shrugged.
"Thanks for the ride home guys." Merdith said getting her bags. "See you bright and early?"
"Right-o." Stephanie said. Janine waved as they pulled away.
"It's summertime. Whats the worst that can happen?" Meredith thought to herself as she went inside her house. "Janines right, I just need to look at this with an open mind."
