Chapter 48

She was suppose to be lying down, but Molly was too restless. She heard Mr. Sanchez’s voice outside and overheard part of the conversation. What could her father have possibly heard that would cause him to not want her to be around Lily? He had always told her to pay no attention to gossip, why would this be any different? She sighed and sat on the edge of her bed. She needed to occupy herself with something that would keep her mind busy.

If she tried to sleep, images of the night before would fill her mind. As soon as she closed her eyes she would feel that man’s arm around her neck, his breath on her face. She’d hear the horrible sound of the gun hitting Mr. Tanner’s head, rendering him unconscious. They were going to take her with them but KC had stopped them. She sacrificed her freedom to save her. What had she said to her, "You crossed me once." She had barely whispered it to her. How did she cross her?

Molly stood up and went to her desk, pulling her journal from the top drawer along with a pencil. Opening to a blank page she wrote it down. "You crossed me once" Sighing again she put her pencil down and looked out the window. They could be a million miles away from here by now or they could be just outside of town waiting…no, she needed to stop this. She needed to stop thinking about it or she’d drive herself mad. Stepping out into the kitchen, she grabbed her market basket and took a quick inventory of what she’d need from the Potter’s store.

"What are you up too?" her father’s voice came from the doorway.

"Baking," was her simple answer. "We haven’t had a pie in so long I thought I make some. And we need bread. I’ll need to go and get some things from the store."

"Would you like me to go with you?" he asked her.

"I can go. I won’t be long," she answered him.

"Get enough for two pies," he said to her. "Bring one to Ms. Patterson. I’m sure she’d appreciate it. She’s been very. . . kind to you." Molly gave him a smile and kissed him on the cheek before walking out the door, basket in hand.

Molly walked slowly up the street toward the store. In her sight came the livery. ‘Lucky,’ she thought. ‘Who was caring for KC’s horse?’ Changing her course, she walked to the livery. Mr. Sacks was just inside the doors. He tipped his battered hat to her.

"Good morning, sir," she greeted him. "I was wondering if you could tell me who is responsible for the care of Casey Jensen’s horse?"

"Miss?" he asked confused.

"He is boarded here, isn’t he? His name is Lucky."

"Sold ‘m," he said simply to her.

"I beg your pardon?" she asked.

"Right after those twisters blew through here. Was lame anyway," he said to her.

"I had no idea," she said softly. She turned to face the back of the livery and remembered that morning when she’d come looking for Colum.

A horse’s wine caused Molly to jump out of her thoughts and whirl around. Placing her hand to her chest she identified the horse it came from as being the very one she was just thinking about, Lucky. "Honestly, you scared half the life out of me. Where’s your mistress this morning?"

Mistress, the word sounded in Molly’s mind like the loudest fog horn on the Island. Mistress, she’d said it out loud. "You crossed me once,"

"Oh my God," Molly breathed out. "What have I done?"

"You alright, miss?" Mr. Sacks asked her.

"Not at all," she said to him walking back outside. She had betrayed a secret she shouldn’t even have known. She needed to apologize to KC. She had to offer some sort of an explanation. Walking up to the jail, Mr. Standish was at post outside. He stood up in greeting to her.

"Good morning," he said to her.

"Good morning," she said back to him. "I was wondering if I could speak to Mr. Jensen?" she asked.

"Molly, is that something you are certain you wish to do?" he asked her.

"There’s something I must discuss with him in private," she answered him. Ezra hesitated a minute before nodding to the girl. She had a determination on her face that reminded him of Bryn and he knew it might not be prudent to try and stop her. He stepped to the door and swung it open for her.

"I’ll be right out here," he said to her. She smiled and nodded at him and walked inside shutting the door behind her. She turned to face the cells just as she had the day before. KC was sitting on the bed facing the other cell and didn’t even seem to notice that she’d come into the jail. Molly nervously clutched her hands at her waist and took a few steps into the room.

"Casey," she said. KC didn’t move. "I came to tell you that I’m sorry for what’s happened to you. I was just at the livery making sure that Lucky was being tended to and Mr. Sacks told me that you sold him. He said that he got lame." There was still no recognition from the figure still stoically sitting on the bed. "I’ve been thinking about what happened last night. About what you did for me and Mr. Tanner. I’m not sure what would have happened had you not. . ." Molly’s voice broke.

She cleared her throat and forced herself to finish what she came here to do. "I realized this morning what you’d meant about crossing you once." There was still no reaction from KC. Molly stepped toward the cells foolishly ignoring the voice inside her telling her not to after what happened the previous night.

"Casey, you must believe me. I never meant any harm. I never, ever would have said what I did had I thought I wasn’t alone in that Livery. The night you were shot, Lily was in your room. She’d been up for nearly two days and she needed sleep. I sat with you and you started dreaming I guess. You threw the blankets off of yourself and I saw... I never breathed a word to anyone. I never so much as wrote it in my journal. Somehow, somehow it felt too much like I was betraying you." Molly’s voice became more and more desperate as she spoke. "Casey, please say something to me," she begged her. There was still nothing.

KC wanted to say something but she couldn’t bring herself to. She didn’t want to believe what this girl was saying but somewhere deep inside she knew that Molly really meant what she said. Molly Gallagher was one of the only people KC had ever met who was as kind as she seemed. Maybe that’s part of the reason why she didn’t let Frank and Jesse take her. This world needed all the kind souls it could get.

The door opened and Molly jumped, and quickly wiped at her eyes before turning to face whoever had walked in. It was Vin Tanner. "You all right?" he asked her. She nodded and walked past him back outside. He gave KC a look before following her out. He’d been angry at Ezra when he’d come to relive him only to find out that he’d let Molly go inside to talk with KC alone.

He knew that Ezra wouldn’t have placed the girl in danger but he still found himself feeling responsible for her especially after the night before. It’d be a long time before the image of her being held against the cell bars and the look in her eyes ever left his mind. "Molly," he called to her as she walked up the street. She stopped and turned in his direction. "JD was askn’ for ya earlier," he said when he caught up to her. "He wanted to make sure you were alright."

"Please tell him that I’m fine and that I appreciate his concern," she said to him.

"You could tell him yourself, he’s in the saloon. Went with Josiah and I to try and track down those two," he told her.

"Did you find them?" she asked, hopefully.

"Covered their tracks pretty good," he answered her. "Don’t you worry though, they’d be too stupid to hang around here." She only nodded again. "He was really on the worry about you," he said. She looked at him quizzically. "JD I mean."

"I’ll. . . um . . . I’ll speak with him later," she said. "I should finish my errands." He touched the brim of his hat to her as she walked away. He found himself wishing that he could take all her fears away. ‘It ain’t right,’ he thought to himself as the image of her in the jail the night before was replaced with the one of her at the dance just a few evenings before. That was the image he would keep in his mind of her and hate himself every second for thinking.

"Molly Gallagher," Mrs. Potter’s voice carried throughout the entire store as she flew out from behind the counter to rush to her. "I tell you that all anyone’s talked about this morning is what happened to you last night. Are you alright you poor thing?"

"Perfectly fine, thank you just the same," Molly said to her. The bells on the door rang out behind them and both turned to see a woman enter the store. She was as tall as Molly’s father. Her black hair was braided and she was dressed in men’s clothes.

"Can I help you?" Mrs. Potter said to her.

"I came to stock up on some supplies," the woman said to her. Mrs. Potter turned to Molly.

"It’s alright, I know were most everything is already. Why don’t you help her," Molly said. Mrs. Potter and the woman walked further into the store. Molly knew that the topic of her ordeal would soon be forgotten as soon as Mrs. Potter found out all about this woman. Some things would never change and that thought brought Molly her first true smile of the day.

Later that afternoon, a fresh pie in hand, Molly made her way to the saloon. There were only a few patrons and Lily was at her place behind the bar. She smiled and walked from behind it to greet Molly. "Shouldn’t you be resting, Cher?" she asked her.

"I couldn’t," Molly said handing her the pie. "This is for you. My father insisted," she added smiling at her.

"Your father?" Lily asked her, not quite understanding. Molly simply nodded. Lily inwardly let out a sigh of relief. "Let’s take this into the back and I’ll make some tea," she said.

"I’d like that," Molly said as JD and Buck both walked inside. JD and Molly’s eyes met and quickly averted from each other. Buck and Lily shared a knowing look. Lily placed her arm around Molly’s shoulders.

"I think that you and I should talk," she said knowingly, leading Molly into the kitchen.
