"Rise and shine, little girl, Rise and shine!" Peggy said aloud as she drew the curtains of Lucy's hospital ward, letting the sun's rays hit her face.
"Hey..." Lucy moaned and placed her arm over her eyes. She had a sleepless night, crying about Nick and now she didn't even feel like getting out of bed but Peggy was determined to sit her in her wheelchair and wheel her around the hospital. Peggy tugged gently at her bedclothes and she finally gave in. "OK, fine! I will rise, but I will not shine." She yawned and tried to get up with the help of Peggy. Her chest still hurt badly and her leg was in a cast, but she managed to get into the wheelchair and into the bathroom to wash up a little.
"Where are we going today?" She asked Peggy while eating a little toast and drinking a glass of milk. She winced when she saw the hospital food, they looked totally gross and she couldn't stand the thought of having to eat the hospital food for one whole week!
"I thought that we might go for a spin around this place and see if there's anything for us to do, afterall you'll have to get used to this place you know?" Peggy said with a twinkle in her eye.
"Okay, fine then. I'm done with breakfast, so we are ready to go now." Lucy pushed away what was left of her unappetising breakfast and moved her wheelchair away from from the table. Peggy smiled at her enthusiasm and wheeled her out of the ward.
They went past many wards and Lucy was actually in a much better mood after having Peggy say so many jokes to her and making her laugh and smile, even though it hurt her to laugh sometimes, she didn't mind one bit. Finally, they ended up at the children's ward and Peggy wheeled her in. The children were sitting on the floor of the ward as if expecting someone. When Peggy wheeled her in, Lucy asked what they were waiting for and Peggy just told her to wait and see.
A nurse walked into the ward just then and upon seeing Lucy told the children that their story-teller for the day is finally ready to appear. The children clapped and cheered and waited patiently for the story-teller to appear. Lucy sat up, interested. She loved children and used to tell stories to her siblings before they slept back when they were younger. She smiled at the memory and snapped back to reality when she saw a familiar person walk in. His hair was styled perfectly, a golden crown above his head. His blue eyes sparkled and Lucy gasped when she saw him. She immdiately tried to wheel herself out of the ward, but Peggy stopped her and told her to listen to what he had to say.
Nick took his seat at the front of the group of kids and greeted them a good morning. The children greeted him back happily even though they were all sick.
"Well, children, my name is Nickolas but you can call me Nick." Nick grinned at their happy faces. All the children immediately said a hi to him. He continued, "I've got a book here in my hand, but it's a story I wrote myself so there are no pictures, okay?" Some of the children groaned a little but Nick promised them a little chocolate treat later so they immediately perked up again. He opened the little notebook and started reading, "Once upon a time, there was a prince named Nickolas and a princess called Lucy." One kid quipped, "Hey! That's your name!" Nick feigned surprise and said, "Well, what do you know, yes it is!" Lucy gave a little smile and Nick looked up at her and smiled to himself.
"The princess was the most beautiful, clever, talented and nicest princess in all the land and he wanted more than anything to have her. He asked the princess to dance with him one night and they danced all night long. He was the happiest prince in the whole kingdom and loved the princess more than anything." He paused to look at Lucy and she stared back into his earnest blue eyes. By now, a few children have already noticed her and kept looking back at her. He had a twinkle in his eye and went back to his story, "But one day, a witch from a far away place came and told him many lies about the princess."
"Why did the witch tell so many lies about the princess, Nick?" a little girl with two ponytails asked.
"That's because she was jealous of the princess. She was jealous that the prince spent so much time with the princess. Unfortunately, the prince started to believe the lies and the princess ran away from the kingdom. The prince became very unhappy and searched high and low for her after realising how silly he was. He finally found her in a cave not far away from his castle and asked her to go back with him and return to him." He closed the notebook and looked at the children. Then, he said, "I cannot write the end of this story because I don't know what the end is. What do you think the princess would say, children?" The children immediately chorused, "Yes! Yes!" Nick looked at Lucy and waited for a reply. She had tears in her eyes and was smiling, feeling giddy with happiness. She mouthed a yes and Nick immediately smiled and said, "And so the prince and the princess rode off into the sunset on their white stallion and lived happily ever after."
"Yay!" The children jumped up and cried. The nurse stood up, gave Nick a hug and then took over the story-telling. Peggy wheeled Lucy out of the ward and met Nick outside. Nick gave her a huge hug and kiss on the cheek and she told him to take good care of Lucy. He bent down next to Lucy and gave her a smile and kissed her on the lips gently.
"Welcome back." He said softly to her and she smiled back at him. He covered her with another jacket and started to push her wheelchair toward the entrance and opened the door of a white limousine for her. The white stallion, Lucy thought with a smile.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"I'm bringing you home to change and then for a lunch." He bent down beside her and whispered into her ear, "I'm never, ever going to leave you again, trust me. I promise that I'll never hurt you." She smiled at the promise he finally could make to her.
"Thank you." She kissed him passionately and they were driven off into the morning sunlight. It has stopped snowing and a little sun was out. It was going to be a beautiful Christmas Day and Lucy knew it.
