"Hi everybody!" Lucy called out as she entered the house. Everyone gave her a wave and a hug and as she plopped down on her chair, she scanned the room for Nick. He wasn't around and she asked Tyra where he went.
"Oh, he said that he was going to look around the area and check the place out. He should be back soon." Tyra answered and smiled. She had guessed that there was something going on between the both of them. In fact, she and Peggy were talking about it before Lucy arrived.
"So..." Tyra looked Lucy in the eye. "Lucy, there's something going on between you and Nick, right?" Lucy nodded her head slowly, flustered. She hadn't realised that it was that obvious. Tyra gave an excited giggle. "So it's big?" Lucy whacked her on the arm, and said in a hushed voice, "Not really! It's as big as your relationship with Kev." She threw a look at Kev who was at the the dinner table with Peggy and the other three guys. Tyra gave a nervous laugh and then said cheekily, "Then, it's huge!" Lucy thrust a throw pillow at her and ran into the living room, feeling happier and more in love than she had ever felt before.
Nick finally reached home as the sun was setting. He had a little trouble finding his way back but it was mostly because he was thinking about something else, instead of concentrating on the road. When he entered the house and into the kitchen to get a drink, he saw Lucy in there and he immediately tried to back out from the kitchen. But Lucy saw him and gave him a huge smile and a hello, he only smiled back uncomfortably at her.
"So, how was your day?" She asked as she walked towards him and turned him around, faced his back and started to massage his shoulders. He shrugged her off gently and she felt hurt. Confused, she asked, "What's the matter?"
"Nothing." His answer was short and curt. She felt uneasy at his sudden coldness and took a step away from him. Oh no, she thought, please don't let this happen to me. I've been hurt bad once and I don't want myself to get hurt again. She looked up to the ceiling, and then back at him.
"Okay," she managed to choke out. Her voice was trembling a little and she knew that she was going to cry soon. He seemed clearly shocked at her reaction and turned around to face her and his iciness disappeared.
"Hey, I didn't mean to hurt you. Don't be upset. Oh, Luce, don't cry." He brought his hand up to her face and wiped her tear away from her cheek and she closed her eyes and tried to calm herself down. She suddenly blurted out, "Nick, please don't be mean to me again!" And she buried her face into his shoulder and he tried to hush her and stop her crying. For a moment, Peggy and Brian walked in to see what was going on, but Nick waved them out and then brought Lucy upstairs by the kitchen stairs so that the rest couldn't see her crying.
As he sat by her bed and tucked her in, she grabbed his hand and in a quiet voice said, "Promise me that you'll never hurt me Nick, cos I promise you that I won't ever hurt you." Her face was filled with sadness and Nick bent over to kiss her on her forehead. "Take a good rest," he said. "You've had a long day." And he walked out of the room, disappointed with himself that he was not able to make that promise.
As he entered the living room, everyone looked at him, waiting for some kind of explanation, but he pretended not to notice them and just sat there and ate his dinner. Peggy finally went up to him and asked, "Why was Lucy crying?" He stopped eating and simply said, "I don't know." He then excused himself from the room and went back to his room. I don't know? He sighed. He did know and he felt terrible. He laid down on his bunk and stared at the ceiling above his head. Brian came in shortly and he wanted to talk to Nick, but Nick turned over to his sideand pretended that he was sleeping. And for the first time in many years, a single tear rolled down from his eye and fell onto the pillow, like a drop of ink in a vast ocean.
