Positive or Negative

Focusing on the positive does NOT mean ignoring the negative. It is unrealistic and detrimental to deny that negative things exist.

Positive focus is determined more by how you respond than by how you perceive. There is no positive value in refusing to see or acknowledge your problems. In fact, that could be very harmful.

A positive attitude is not achieved by turning a blind eye to the negative, but rather by responding to every situation in the most positive way possible.

See negative things for what they are, and then respond with positive action. Acknowledge and accept the problems, the difficulties, the shortcomings, the abuses, and then do something positive about them. Denial and evasion will do nothing to address your problems. Positive action will!

(A brief bio on where I'm coming from: Live every moment of Life to the Fullest! ! Every moment of Life is precious so appreciate it :) (I don't believe in blind optimism or unrealistic Polly-annish patronizing platitudes which can be just as bad as pessimistic negativism --my philosphy is about Productive, Rational belief systems/positive attitudes that produces RESULTS, positive action & happiness --it's about building determination, courage/fearlessness, and confidence). Both my parents were killed when I was 4 years-old (growing up an orphan made me very independant & tough) (and I was almost killed twice in my life too) so my Philosphy & Passion in Life is to make the World a Better, Brighter, Warmer place--to help & EMPOWER others to be the best they can be(even more Confident,More Independant, Stronger & Tougher --to Feel Inspired about living Life to the Fullest while we still can -by spreading happiness & share my philosphies with everyone who are wise enough to seek enlightenment (and kick ass at the same time, hahah --literally, the guts to stand up, confront, & destroy injustice & evil/stupidity when it rears it's ugly head (like literally breaking the arms of batterers, child abusers, bullies, etc (I never start fights but I always finish them & I don't hesitate to dislocate the arms of bad guys as a way of teaching them a lesson :) -to squeeze every drop & Spread as Much HAPPINESS as Possible out of each Precious Moment of Life:) "Every moment is a memory in the making"-let's make them happy memories worth remembering

It's why I do&teach Martial Arts(Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Black Belt- 1st dan)(I teach VERY LETHAL JAPANESE JIU-JITSU MOVES LIKE THROAT STRIKES, ARMBREAKERS/JOINT BREAKERS,etc :), teaching & inspiring others to Be Even More Confident, Stronger, Independant, & Tougher!) (in my spare time, volunteer teach Martial-Arts/self-defense seminars at the Child Abuse Prevention Centers & Battered Women's/RapePrevention Centers by teaching LETHAL Japanese Jiu-Jitsu moves!) --Martial Arts is also great for teachiing/learning Honor & Respect & how to help & appreciate others) & occasionally teach Flips/Gymnastics to gymnasts/martial arttists/cheerleading/dance teams too so inspiring & teaching others to take risks, do flips, dare, etc comes naturally to me). Interestlingly enough, have you ever noticed that almost all superheroes like Spider-Man, Batman, DareDevil, Superman, almost all the X-Men, etc. all had their parents killed? It gives them the motivation to make the world a better place while at the same time making them tough bad-asses who don't hesitate to kick-ass (because not everyone can be saved, not everyone is good, there are evil/bad people in the world, etc --don't stress yourself out trying to save everyone or everything in the world.. let go of the need or desire to save everyone or everything in the world & just serenely accept that some people aren't wise enough (and their purpose is just to serve as a warning to others not to be like them, LOL :P)...

You can think of Life as a Test.. a series of challenges & opportunities.. opportunities for you to flourish & succeed ..and tests/challenges to see if you can overcome weakness/temptation/hardship .. the opportunities & tests never stop.. and Life will keep giving you the same lessons over & over until you learn from them (so don't make the same mistakes twice :P :)

With that in mind, here's a collection of my favorite inspirational proverbs ingrained into me from hours of Zen training (and lots of Bugs Bunny cartoons--ha, ha--just kidding) to help you stay positively focused (yeah, you too can sound like the hippest fortune cookie around :)

I love inspirational quotes..they inspire us to live better, feel better, give us hope & increase our joy & appreciation, help us get thru the challenges we all face to get to the happier times we all seek :)
Here's one of my favs by Rudyard Kipling:
If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it
Risk It

To laugh is to risk being a fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement.
To express feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd
Is to risk their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.

The person who risks nothing,
Does nothing,
Has nothing and is nothing.

They may avoid suffering and sorrow,
But they simply cannot learn,
Feel, change, grow, love or live.

Risks must be taken because,
The greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
Only a person who risks is free

(Yah, I love that song "Put A Little Love In Your Heart"--
Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart
You see it's getting late
Oh, please don't hesitate

Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see

Another day goes by
And still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart
If you want the world to know
We won't let hatred grow

Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see, wait and see

Take a good look around
And if you're lookin' down
Put a little love in your heart
And I hope when you decide
Kindness will be your guide

Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see

Put a little love in your heart
Each and every day
Put a little love in your heart
There's got to be a better way

Put a little love in your heart
Don't you think it's time we start
Put a little love in your heart"
-- what goes around comes around--and the more happiness you spread, the more happiness others will be willing to spread themselves & it'll come back to you :)

There's plenty of pleasure in the here and now.
Happiness is like a butterfly. Chase it, and you'll never catch it;
stand still where you are, and it will light on your shoulder.
Even when they find it, some people can't live with appiness.
After a great success, instead of relaxing, they develop anxieties. They worry about accidents, 'what ifs...', etc.
They keep looking for failure and imagine the worst instead of the best that can happen.
Look for pleasure, not pain. Imagine what the good that can happen, not the bad.
Find pleasure in little things: laughter, friends, good food, sunshine, flowers, and service to others.
LEARN THAT HAPPINESS IS INTERNAL.
It's a gift you give to yourself, not just at birthdays or anniversaries, but ALL YEAR ROUND.

77d."Our deepest fear is NOT that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God; your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."---Marianne Williamson

80. "You can either control your temper, or let your temper control you."--Jason James Hun

81. "WINNERS CONTROL THEIR TEMPER; LOSERS LET THEIR TEMPER CONTROL THEM."

(The above statements are pretty useful for curing other negative habits by replacing "temper" with any other negative condition--'You can either control your "___" or let your "___" control you') such as "You can either control your negativity/doubts/fear/pessimissm/etc. or let your negativity/doubts/fear/pessimissm/etc. control you" -- it works pretty well for me since I'm fiercely independent and the thought of being controlled by something outside myself causes me to fight even harder)

86. "IMAGINE THE GOOD THAT COULD HAPPEN, NOT THE BAD--visualize the possibilities in the positive!."--Jason James Hun

87. "You never know when someone
May catch a dream from you.
You never know when a little word
Or something you may do
May open the windows
Of a mind that seeks the light...
The way you live may not matter at all,
But you never know, it might."

87a. "If you admire something someone has said or done, speak up and say so.
You will both be richer for it.
When you think of a nice thing to do for someone, don't just think it.
Do it.
Never be content to think nice thoughts.
Express them, and do them."

88. "You cannot do a kindness too soon, because you never know how soon it will be too late."

88a. "Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish one's growth without destroying one's roots."

89. "Who among us has not enjoyed the beauty and majestic music of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata? It captures the glory of a moonlit night--a glory that's beyond words to describe. This beautiful piece of music came into existence because Beethoven wanted to give something of himself and his talent to a blind girl.
He put his genius to work to produce in sound the beauty that her eyes could not behold. He gave the best of his talent in a selfless act of kindness. As a result, the entire world has been enriched."

90. "It's just as important to sing about beautiful mornings as it is to talk about the rain."--Jason James Hun

91. "Build for yourself a strongbox,
Fashion each part with care;
When it's strong as your hand can make it,
Put all your troubles there;
Hide there all thought of your failures,
And each bitter cup that you quaff;
Lock all your heartaches within it,
Then sit on the lid and laugh.
When you've dropped in your care and worry
Keep them forever there;
Hide them from sight so completely
That the world will never dream half;
Fasten the strongbox securely--
Then sit on the lid and laugh.

92. "A sorrow shared is half a trouble, and joy that's shared is joy made double."

93. "CHOICE, NOT CHANCE, DETERMINES DESTINY."

94. "STAND FOR SOMETHING, OR YOU'LL FALL FOR ANYTHING."

95. "The only people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world--are the people who do."

96. "Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty."

97. "In life, many things will catch your eye, but few will capture your Mind&Heart&Soul...pursue those"

98. "If circumstances don't provide an opportunity, go and make the circumstances an opportunity"--Jason James Hun

99. "YOU CAN'T DO MUCH ABOUT THE LENGTH OF YOUR LIFE, BUT YOU CAN DO A LOT ABOUT ITS DEPTH AND WIDTH."

100. "WHAT WE SEE DEPENDS MAINLY ON WHAT WE LOOK FOR."

101. "WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER ONE OPENS UP SOMEWHERE."

102. "IF IT'S TO BE, IT'S UP TO ME!" (it's important so I'm repeating it :)

103. "People (whether wittingly or unwittingly) choose whether their actions and speech are to be either positive, productive, creative, and supportive to themselves and the people around them--or negative, destructive, unproductive, and sabotaging.

Before saying or doing something, ask yourself whether what you say or do will be productive(or lead to greater harmony) or will it be destructive? For example, replace "you suck in gymnastics/math/mental control/whatever/etc." with "you need to jump higher/practice-study more/etc."--the first statement just criticized while the second actually said something useful for improving performance!
You can either be a force for positive change or a force for negativity--it's up to you"--Jason James Hun (jeez, my name is on the byline of so many of these that I sound so freakin' wise --ha, ha, I oughta write my own book)

(hmmm, I'm thinking up another one...coming any second now...:)

While we're at it, it's IMPORTANT YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE MESSAGES, PEOPLE, ENVIRONMENTS, SONGS, ETC. for optimum fitness as well as health.

Stress and negativity has been scientifically shown in experiments as well as real-world studies to increase catabolic cortisol levels and decrease growth hormone/testosterone levels resulting in muscle loss, stunted growth, impaired immune responses, etc.)

Don't waste time listening to negativity in the media (songs, movies, magazines, etc.) or in negative people. SEEK OUT & LISTEN TO POSITIVE UPBEAT SONGS, PEOPLE, MOVIES, MESSAGES, EXPERIENCES, ETC. instead of negative ones and you'll really START TO NOTICE YOUR MOODS & ATTITUDES BECOMING MORE & MORE POSITVE & UPBEAT & FOR THE BETTER :) !!!
LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE--positivity attracts positivity and negativity attracts negativity--it's your choice!

Your thoughts color and determine how and what you feel and you can control the thoughts that run through your mind. Negative thoughts that hinder your performance/happiness are mostly irrational and pessimistic. You can learn to overcome these thoughts by countering them with more logical thoughts of your own.

Such irrational thoughts fall under the following 10 categories as classified in cognitive therapy (which has a success rate of 70% --equal to that of psychiatric drugs in the treatment of depression, chronic fatique syndrome, etc.). (A USEFUL & EASY-TO-READ book on learning cognitive therapy that produces PRACTICAL, QUICK, RESULTS is:
"Feeling Good" by Dr. David Burns--HIGHLY RECOMMENDED-if you can only read one psych/self-improvement book, this IS IT) :

1. FORTUNE-TELLING
Negative thoughts such "I'm never going to get this","I'm gonna fall","I'm gonna miss", etc. are negatively irrational predictions about the future--unless you're the world's first real psychic , such thoughts are worth as much (and as credible) as a call to the Psychic Friends Network :) and as "self-protective" as a parachute while swimming (pretty much self-defeating).

2. ALL-OR-NOTHING THINKING
Such thoughts are "I can't get this, I suck","This happens EVERYtime","You're/I'm/He/She is ALWAYS______(fill in the blank with whatever)" are irrationally categorizing events as either 100% this or that/black or white. Well, most things in life are shades of gray--nothing is ALWAYS this way or that("the other line doesn't always move faster").etc.

POSITIVE MENTAL IMAGERY/VISUALIZATION

University research studies have shown that for neural development, the mind cannot distinguish between something vividly imagined/visualized/(mentally rehearsed)from actual real experience (on a casual level you've probably experienced and can relate to: have you ever had a vivid dream that seemed "real" to you until you suddenly woke up? :)

(one example: 3 groups of students underwent a month-long experiment in which one group practiced throwing basketballs into a hoop for 20 minutes a day, a second group did no practice, and a third group IMAGINED themselves accurately throwing basketballs into a hoop.

As expected, the first group of actual practice improved significantly (the second group didn't improve) but the third group who only vividly mentally rehearsed/imagined throwing basketballs also significantly improved their real-life accuracy almost as much as the 1st group).

Mentally rehearsing/vividly imagining/visualizing yourself performing perfectly/behaving in the way you want significantly improves/develops your neural/synaptic connections almost as much as the real thing and very effective for achieving/learning new skills and behaviors if you do it before your actual performance as well as daily/nightly for 10-20+ minutes (just like real practice, you can't just practice only a couple of seconds a day to improve but a couple of minutes is better than none but do strive for over 10+ minutes/day).
