You can VERIFY everything here on the University of California Melvyl MEDLINE medical database and at www.medscape.com(the fastest) or at www.healthgate.com with the LATEST SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH DATA--unlike most of the (OUTDATED) misinformation you read in most newspapers and magazines.

A brief athletic/background BIO (otherwise known as "credentials/expertise/or why I know what I'm talking about--lol" =): Before I outgrew it & got too tall, I was a gymnast at UC Berkeley (I tore my ACL/knee ligament before the season even started so I didn't get to compete--owww!--transfered to another university in southern Calif instead--I grew up in and love Southern California!). I've majored in premed biochemistry(molecular cell biology)/psychology/studio art/economics and (finally!)computer science(exploring different majors every semester/quarter is fun!) and researched dozens of papers/science journals /books/medical databases on fatloss, exercise, muscle-growth, nutrition, enhancing athletic/sports performance, etc.

I'm also into bodybuilding and flexiblity/stretching (friends nicknamed me "Van-Damme" because I easily do full splits between two chairs & have a muscular physique) as well as teach martial arts/gymnastics/tumbling/cheerleading classes (teaching gymnastics is one of the most rewarding ways of giving back to the sport) after computer programming (ASP/Java/C++/HTML/etc).

As an ENFP (and ESFP) personality type (same as Robin Williams/"Captain Wildchild"/Calvin & Hobbes" at times), I've experimented with and tried almost every supplement and exercise program (and most of the ones out there sucked but there are a few good ones)--I'm into everything and can and will try almost everything (I especially like jetskiing, (click here for performing jetskiing tricks), aviation [piloting], sky-diving, scuba-diving, snorkeling, rollerblading, skiing/snowboarding, fencing and other high adrenaline stuff--I used to race my Porsche 968 Cabriolet convertible at over 153+ MPH (what a rush! :)

Everything I write here can be useful for any and every athlete, recreational or competitive.

I write from personal first-hand EXPERIENCE--everything I've written has been personally tested and passed with flying colors--as well as the LATEST SCIENTIFIC BIOCHEMICAL RESEARCH and it takes a lot for me to recommend anything since I'm an intelligent scientific skeptic (it comes from having a background in (premed) biochemistry at UCBerkeley where I was a (okay, I don't mean to boast- but here are my credentials to help dispel the stereotype that men with muscles lack intelligence by showing that you can have muscles as well as brains :-) : UCBerkeley Alumni Leadership finalist, National Merit Finalist-(ranked in the 99.5+% percentile w/1450 S.A.T.s), 5's & 4's on my A.P. tests without studying,149 I.Q. test results, etc.,etc. (okay, sorry, enough ego-tripping:) --I don't normally boast since as I used to be very shy(I'm bold/confident & outgoing now:)--just giving you my credentials & experience) --no gullible placebo effect here (I used to be a skeptic about supplements and grew up believing in all the FDA-governmental-mainstream propaganda about "athletes don't need extra PROTEIN , vitamins", etc.,etc. and other B.S. until I actually supplemented [after finding out in my human performance laboratory test lab that I was deficient in zinc, PROTEIN ,& other stuff] and saw my performance and strength skyrocket from good to great--my max bench press went from 225 pounds to 300 pounds :)

MOST of the ATHLETIC-NUTRITION-FATLOSS INFORMATION you read in most magazines, most nutrition textbooks, & newspaper articles that are put out there by supposed "experts" and the government-FDA-mainstream newsmedia are OUTDATED and MISINFORMED (they're biased & more concerned about long-term cardiovascular health than improving your physique/sports performance) (which is why most of those "experts" are STILL flabby and STILL overweight (or STILL scrawny) and so are they're followers--don't become one of those lemmings that are examples of "the blind following the blind".
Look behind the source of any information you get and see if the people following or espousing them have the RESULTS you seek
--(for example, if you want to get CUT/RIPPED, follow the steps of someone's WHO IS CUT/RIPPED, not some nutritional writer/teacher/professor/trainer/dr./whatever who's FLABBY/FAT; if you want to get STRONG/MUSCULAR, learn from someone WHO IS STRONG/MUSCULAR, not weak with pathetic muscle; if you want to become SUCCESSFUL, learn from someone WHO IS SUCCESSFUL, not someone who fails; etc, etc.,-- YOU CAN & WILL SUCCEED if you have the RIGHT METHODS & the RIGHT MINDSET!)

Make sure you read the NUTRITION, EXERCISE, and the POSITIVE MENTAL FOCUS/HEALTH subpages--they're ESSENTIAL info distilled from the hype and propaganda out there! Most of what you read in "mainstream propaganda/nutrition textbooks/newsmedia" are based on flawed studies (they expect results in weeks instead of months, use too low a dosage or inactive ingredients, no double-blind placebo controls, etc.) and just regurgitate the same info/propaganda that's been outdated since 5th grade :)

NUTRITION--the foundation for everything!

1) To be the best gymnast or athlete or achieving the best physique possible requires the best nutrition at optimum levels, which can make a dramatic difference in strength, muscle, mass, and fatloss.

ALL THE EXERCISE IN THE WORLD IS'NT GOING TO IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE OR PHYSIQUE UNLESS YOU HAVE THE NUTRIENTS NECESSARY FOR MUSCULAR GROWTH/FATLOSS and, conversely, ALL THE NUTRIENTS in the world won't help unless you ALSO EXERCISE CORRECTLY

Sadly, (due to outdated research done in the 60's on couch potatoes which the dinosaur FDA extrapolated to athletes and even now continues to propagandize to the medical community and news media), it is an area often neglected by even elite athletes--university studies have shown and continues to show that most athletes such as gymnasts, dancers, runners, etc. were deficient (or had suboptimum levels for elite performance) in many important nutrients such as PROTEIN , zinc, magnesium, folic acid, calcium, etc.--all important for healthy, strong, vibrant skin, muscle, avoiding shin/forearm splints/stress fractures, etc. (I was one of those gymnasts who was deficient in zinc, calcium, magnesium, and PROTEIN because I grew up believing the B.S. given to me by so-called experts in my nutrition classes & newspapers/magazines!)

The best nutrition book by far (most scientifically supported/researched/documented) is "Optimum Sports Nutrition" by the most excellent Dr. Michael Colgan (scientist/consultant to hundreds of Olympic athletes). It's actually fun to read as Dr. Colgan writes in a refreshingly witty and irreverent style that makes for light but informative and enlightening reading. However, he and his book are a bit outdated (published in 1993) so he's not the last word in sports nutrition/drug performance--he's mostly good but clueless and wrong on a few pharmacuetical topics he doesn't have first hand experience with.

POSITIVE MENTAL FOCUS/HEALTH--essential reading and the foundation for a brilliant mind!

Master your mind and you can master your body. You really can do anything you set your mind to--even if it's improving your mind :). Ultimate performance is achieved when mind and body are one. Two of the best books for achieving positive results are "Feeling Good" by Dr. David Burns (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED-if you can only read one self-improvement/psych book, this IS IT) and "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman. These books show you how to control your attitudes/what you think and your frame of mind so that you stay positively focused so that successful performance and behavior follows.

Fears, self-doubts, worry,etc. do not exist in external situations--they exist only in your mind. Positive or negative thoughts can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Clearing your mind of any negatives can be accomplished by "talking back" to the negative voices/thoughts in your head as in cognitive therapy or through meditation--how you perceive reality colors how you experience reality... GYMNASTICS

MARTIAL ARTS (A Path to Enlightenment--as well as How to Shatter Concrete Slabs, Wooden Boards, and an Attacker's Face)

Bone, like muscle, will respond to stress by becoming stronger and denser. In addition to increased density (provided that you are ingesting an adequate amount of zinc, calcium, & magnesium, the calcium/mineral matrix making up your bones will realign themselves specifically in the direction of stress applied repeatedly against them (such as stronger/denser shins/heels from gymnastics tumbling, stronger/denser radial/ulnal(forearm) bones from forearm strikes against wooden boards(or other hard targets such as the Wooden Man/Dummy, etc.).

Most gymnasts and power tumblers, for example, have enough bone density and strength in the legs/heels to shatter wooden boards their first day in martial arts class and can work their way up (like everyone else who has the desire and determination) to concrete slabs.

A good martial arts school will/MUST include sparring(actual fighting--although usually everyone holds back some unless heavily padded) as a major and primary component of training because that is where 90% of the actual learning of what works and what doesn't takes place(there's a big difference between theory(katas) and real life)! There is much, much more (hundreds of books) but I'll distill some of what I consider most pertinent (and fun to read :).. EXERCISE--the foundation for a chiseled physique and peak performance!

Do you want a NICE, MUSCULAR, TONED PHYSIQUE (as well as doubling the height of your tumbling passes and do iron crosses and press into handstands from the splits)? Then weightlifting(free weights or machines) is the answer! Weightlifting (just 3-4 times a week for about 1 hour) is essential for developing maximum strength for power tumbling! If you're female, don't worry, you won't get huge muscles or turn into Schwarzeneggar (it's impossible since women lack the necesarry testosterone and extra muscle fibers to develop large muscles--women produce 20-40 times less testosterone than men).

TESTOSTERONE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT HORMONE FOR THE REPAIR, MAINTENANCE, AND GROWTH OF YOUR MUSCLES (as well as your libido)! Muscle produces testosterone so the more muscle you gain, the more testosterone, growth hormone, and IGF-1 hormone levels you will have, giving you more energy and making working out much easier and pleasurable!

Conversely, higher fat levels are associated with lower levels of testosterone and growth hormone circulating through your body.

The latest year-long studies and lab results show that CIGARETTE SMOKE (even second-hand smoke) CAUSES LONG-TERM, SIGNIFICANT, SERIOUS DECREASES IN TESTOSTERONE LEVELS and PERMANENTLY DAMAGES/KILLS LEYDIG CELLS (the cells in the testes responsible for producing most of the testosterone)--(gee, and you used to think it only damaged your lungs/skin cells and respiratory system).

A FRIENDLY WARNING (you're intelligent & old enough to make your own decisions--just realize that some decisions will lead to greater fulfillment & happiness while others will be self-sabotaging): Don't smoke and AVOID SECOND-HAND SMOKE(it's even worse than smoking yourself) unless you want to have weaker/smaller muscles and be impotent and/or premature :)

Also note that studies have shown that alcoholism/binge drinking in men is also correlated with lower testosterone levels as well as higher fat levels (hence the term beer belly :).

Best of all, having more muscle from weightlifting burns calories 24 hours a day (it begets a high metabolism--each pound of lean muscle burns/needs 34-37 calories per day for maintenance--think of it: if you have 60 pounds of lean muscle, you automatically burn over 2,000 calories a day just lying around:) so that you most likely don't even have to do aerobic/cardio exercise to stay lean and you can still enjoy Ben&Jerry's ice cream, pizza, hamburgers(no cheese), steak, seafood, & chocolate (I love O.D.ing on Nestle's Alpine White! ;)--so weightlift!

FATLOSS--why most diets/cardio programs fail!

***IMPORTANT UPDATE! For increased fatloss, INCREASE PROTEIN intake to at least 33-50+% of your diet--drop as much carbs as you can for increased fatloss--it's carbohydrates that cause a large insulin rise in your bloodstream--insulin is the hormone that causes your body to STORE whatever you eat (good when you want to shuttle PROTEIN into growing muscle(after a workout) & get bigger muscle but bad if you want to burn fat)--especially bad for fatloss is any refined white flour products, white rice, rice cakes, pastry, etc. Your body will find it very hard to burn fat when insulin levels are high. If you can go on an all- PROTEIN or mostly PROTEIN diet, do it as you will burn the most fat that way :) Once you're satisfied with your fatloss, you can resume eating normal levels of carbs (for me, that's about 40-60+% PROTEIN , 30% carbs, 10-20% fat as part of my normal caloric intake) I'll explain more later or just pickup a copy of Protein Power: The High-Protein/Low Carbohydrate Way to Lose Weight, Feel Fit, and Boost Your Health-in Just Weeks! by Dr. Eades and Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution with more scientific documentation on high- PROTEIN diets for fatloss***

DIETING BY ITSELF IS INEFFECTIVE for PERMANENT FATLOSS. Aerobics/cardio by itself is also ineffective for permanent fatloss. Only WEIGHTLIFTING (supplemented by possible cardio and a diet of at least 33%-50+% PROTEIN ) IS EFFECTIVE for PERMANENT fatloss and staying lean. Interval training (high-intensity bursts of cardio/aerobic exercise(such as sprinting) followed by moderate intensity bursts) is the most effective method for fatloss (and the quickest method of losing fat when doing cardio) as a supplement to WEIGHTLIFTING/RESISTANCE training. The high-intensity-followed-by-moderate-intensity interval cardio training increases the resting metabolism sigificantly more than just plain low/moderate-intensity-cardio for hours after the training session (note that you should also be on a weightlifting/resistance training program also for even more effective results--REMEMBER TO DO CARDIO IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOUR WEIGHTLIFTING/RESISTANCE EXCERCISES because you need your muscles fresh & not exhausted for peak weightlifting/resistance benefits. Don't do your cardio before weightlifting (that reverse order is the most common mistake you see people do in the gym!). (Note that I say fatloss,not weightloss, because you can lose fat and weigh more because you are gaining more denser muscle)

You SHOULD/MUST be WEIGHTLIFTING(free weights or machines or even just dips, handstand pushups, pullups, etc)(see the above EXCERCISE section) to build the muscle tone necessary to burn fat (the more muscle you have, the more mitochondria(in muscle) you have to burn fat--you will also secrete more testosterone and growth hormone--important for "youth" and fitness. On the other hand, higher fat levels are correlated with lower levels of testosterone).

According to dozens of SCIENTIFIC UNIVERSITY RESEARCH STUDIES as well as real-world results, the most effective supplement for real, significant fat-loss is EPHEDRINE (a stimulant/beta-agonist) (20 mg) mixed with Caffeine (200 mg) with optional 300 mg aspirin (U can omit aspirin--U can also include 5 mg of Yohimbine for even more results) for a very potent synergistic effect that will cause your body to burn up to 90% of its calories from fat instead of using your glycogen & muscle tissue for fuel (the proper ratio is 20:200:300 of EPHEDRINE , Caffeine , and optional aspirin)(U can also add 5 mg of Yohimbine for even more results). YOU CAN OMIT THE ASPIRIN AND STILL ACHIEVE 90% OF THE FATLOSS RESULTS :) (the aspirin is mainly for enhancing the duration/effect of the Caffeine ) It's especially effective (even more fatloss than Redux or phen-fen according to scientifc studies) when combined with a weightlifting/exercise program.

That's why most aerobic/cardio programs fail for permanent fat loss! You lose almost as much precious fat-burning muscle tissue as you do fat--(more on this in later paragraphs) ... Both groups lost about the same weight (23 lbs vs. 21 lbs.) but the EPHEDRINE / Caffeine group had 9.9 pounds more fatoss and only 3 lbs of muscle loss (the placebo group cannibalized more than 6.16 lbs more muscle tissue than the ephed/caff group!) DON'T take EPHEDRINE (also known as Ma Huang or ephedra) if you have high blood pressure, heart/prostate problems, etc. or if you're using any medication containing PPA (phenylpropanolamine)(found in most cold/flu remedies/decongestants/most diet pills) or any other stimulants/adrenalin releasers/beta agonists (such as clenbuterol, nitroglycerin, some asthma medication, etc.) since when combined they can be dangerous/fatal/addictive but otherwise EPHEDRINE is SAFE when you don't exceed 3 doses per day. Take one dose( EPHEDRINE EPHEDRINE / Caffeine /aspirin or Yohimbine) in the morning, another in the afternoon, and one before weightlifting/cardio and you will see results in 3 weeks (stop after 3-5 weeks because your receptors will become attenuated to it--restart after 1-2 months if you want even more fatloss) :)

You can just take a 25 mg dose of EPHEDRINE , a 200 mg dose/tablet of Caffeine , and an OPTIONAL 325 mg dose/tablet of aspirin (or optional Yohimbine) all at once or you can just take a premixed version available at any health food store. Good , reputable brands are the capsule versions of GEN "Thermonol XS"(best brand, I think, & what I use), "Xenadrine", Twinlab's "Ripped Fuel" & "Diet Fuel"(MAKE SURE THEY'RE THE VERSIONS THAT CONTAIN EPHEDRINE /MA HUANG--THE OTHER VERSIONS WITHOUT EPHEDRINE /MA HUANG ARE CRAP), and Sportpharma's "Thermadrene" & "Hydroxycut"(it's overpriced) . They already contain EPHEDRINE and Caffeine in the proper ratios but not aspirin so remember to take an aspirin tablet with each dose (note that aspirin is optional and a nice bonus but it's not vital to the EPHEDRINE / Caffeine stack). Do NOT use any of the unstandardized, unsafe "herbal Xtasy" crap on the market (which were the causes for most of the OVERDOSING fatalities sensationalized in the newsmedia, especially some moronic talkshows who don't have a clue about sports biochemistry [some moronic druggie teen-agers took 8-16+ doses at once in an attempt to get high-- EPHEDRINE didn't kill them, stupidity did]).

I've had relatives & friends (who weighed 200+ lbs) lose as much as 20 pounds (mostly fat) in a month and got really cut by weightlifting, cardio, and using the EPHEDRINE / Caffeine /aspirin stack--you can expect 2-5 pounds lost per week depending on your own mass and regime (I use e/c/a when cutting up). In total, some of my relatives/friends lost over 45+ pounds in 2 months (and they used to be obese/240+ pounds their entire lives previously) following these fatloss/exercise tips

FLEXIBILITY--essential for peak physical performance!

Doing splits is FUN! Yes, that's right--everytime you stretch, brainwash yourself into thinking "...this feels GOOD...this is FUN...this feels GOOD...this is FUN...this feels GOOD..." :)
It takes about 21 continuous days of conditioning (according to university research) for the mind to incorporate anything new (whether it's learning something new or brainwashing :). After a couple of days of repeating the above mantra while stretching, you will actually start to look forward to and enjoy your stretches and they will actually start to feel good (sort of like being addicted to exercise since you'll start pumping out endorphins to counteract the pain).

Looking forward to and enjoying your stretches (as well as exercise or any other endeavor) is very important for success since it gives you the motivation and desire necessary because stretching takes dedication,determination, and persistence. When it comes to doing splits/stretching, the MORE, the BETTER!

At the mininum, you should stretch 6-7 times a week, (at least once per day) for at least 15 minutes each session if you want to improve your static flexibility (2-4 times a week if you just want to maintain your flexibility).

You should hold each stretch for at least 15+ (preferably 30-60+) seconds of slight pain/pressure (you should push against the ground or other resistance--similar to way you push against the resistance provided by a partner in PNF stretching (after a while, it won't seem painful anymore and you'll just feel a nice tightness/stretching sensation) and then relax for a 30 seconds to minute and then repeat the 15+ seconds of pressure on the muscle you are stretching.

Remember, the more, the better so stretch/drop into your splits while watching T.V. (especially during commericals since they're perfect for 2-minute quickie stretches), studying, doing your homework, programming,reading, or any other activity that you can do while sitting (find a spot that gives you good visual stimuli so it'll give you something to focus on to distract you from the pain--good places are the beach (it has beautiful scenery: warm sunlight dancing on your skin, the roar of crashing waves, soaring seagulls, nice bikinis :) (Southern California has the cutest girls), pounding surf, etc.) the aerobics room during jazzercise (it's like watching a funky music video), etc.

(I usually stretch while reading a magazine, a textbook, the newspaper (the comics are great for laughs to make the stretch feel better), etc. after I exercise and at the beach :).

If you're going to the beach for a tan or lying by the pool, you might as well drop into your splits and kill two birds with one stone. Heck, you can even do it while eating lunch, dinner, etc. (if you're at a restaurant, just do your splits between two chairs so you can eat at the table too--try it at the Ritz-Carlton and see the fun that happens--on a dare, I've actually done my "Van-Damme" splits at Las Brisas, The Towers, Splashes, as well as at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel--they were fun adventures--nothing bad happenned--I know how to be very discreet :)

Come to think of it, to best enhance your performance & training, the MORE you practice or stretch, THE BETTER you'll get so you should practice your gymnastics routines as well as splits anywhere and everywhere such as at the beach, as part of your workout at the health club, the park, on-campus, etc. Just don't be surprised if cute, confident girls (especially former cheerleaders/gymnasts/dancers) keep coming up to you all the time to say, "WOW! Were you a gymnast?!" (from most girls) or "Were you a martial artist?" (from sorority girls who want to be different from most girls :)--one of gymnastics' fringe benefits is that it makes for a really good conversation piece that cute, flirty, and confident girls (especially blonde ones) will use to strike up a conversation with you--sorry if this is going seem boastful (no, I'm not conceited[heck, I used to very shy but stuff like that is what makes me now outoing/confident/bold] but it is one of my goals to destroy the stereotype that computer-experts/Asians/intelligent-people are geeky/nerdy/unattractive by citing real-world examples of how girls can find computer-experts/Asians/intelligent-people attractive)...
(Heck, if you're cute/exotic with a good, ripped physique, girls you haven't even seen or met before will also be coming up to you all the time out of the blue to say, "Hi, Gorgeous!!!" (from Rachel, for example) or "Excuse me, I just want to tell you that you're really good-looking...." (from Brandy, for example), "Do you work out alot? You look...GOOD" (from Laura, for example), "Wow, are those muscles real?!" (from Marie, for example), etc., etc., even when you're NOT doing any gymnastics (the super-confident girls that find you attractive will just approach you out of the blue without you doing anything (what I'm sharing here is just only the tip of the iceberg--there's more wilder stuff girls say to me but I can't repeat them here publicly--I don't kiss & tell--(remember, it's fine to be confident, but don't get cocky;)--sorry if it seems conceited(I'm really not)--I'm only reciting some real-life examples to help destroy the myth/stereotype that intelligent-people/computer-experts/Asians are "geeky/nerdy/unattractive") Gymnastics---you gotta love it!!! For the dynamic flexibility used in high kicks and drop splits (which is separate from static flexibility), you will just have to practice quick/fast/ stretches/kicks that involve a quick burst of power (such as high kicks/drop splits/etc.) at least 6-7 times a week for 15 minutes at a minimum (similar to the section above). Just practice your kicks/drop splits after martial arts/cheerleading practice or exercise session.

TANTRIC--incredible ecstasy!

As a gymnast, you already have strength, flexibility, endurance and body control. Add to that strong PC muscles because... remember all those years your gymnastics coaches would say "tighten your hips, squeeze your bottom, point/curl your toes, etc."?
