Better Birth & Babies' Book List & Store

The Birth Partner
Penny Simkin
This is a great book for yourself or your partner-to-be. Written by a Physical Therapist who is at the forefront of the doula movement, it is required reading for many doula certification programs. Some samples from the table of contents are:
- Getting Ready for Labor
- The Labor Process
- The Concept of "False" Labor
- Normal Labor--In a Nutshell
- Touch and Massage
- Relaxation
- Patterned Breathing
- The Slow-to-Start Labor
- Backache in Labor
- If the Baby is Breech
- Tests, Technologies and Interventions
- Problems That May Arise in Labor or Afterwards
- Medications for Pain During Labor
- Cesarean Childbirth
- The First Few Days Post Partum
It includes easy-to-read charts on determining feelings about pain medications as well as information about the different types. It also gives clear information about medical technology commonly used in birth, when it is used, what the disadvantages are and any alternatives.
It's a small size, perfect for packing in the labor bag, but truly useful in preparing for birth and indespensible when things don't go quite the way you envisioned on B-day!
