RH Williams Laboratory for Diabetes Research, University of Washington, Department of Medicine, Seattle. The research in the Robert H. Williams laboratory is focused on the way diabetes develops. The research is almost entirely funded by the National Institutes of Health to discover diabetes genes and to determine how these genes, together with environmental factors, allow the immune system to attack the insulin-producing cells in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The immune attack is against self antigens and these autoantigens are cloned and used in sensitive and specific assays to find individuals who are on their way to develop insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Of particular importance are autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), insulin and ICA512 which together with genotyping for HLA on chromosome 6 can be used to predict diabetes.

New Gene Linked To Type II Diabetes
*** NIDDM IBC's 9th Annual Conference 4th April 2000, Selfridge Hotel, London, UK. Why You Should Attend This Conference? The potential pharmaceutical market for obesity and NIDDM is huge. There are recognised deficiencies in existing diabetes drugs, and novel drug development in this area is needed. The rapidly expanding knowledge of the cause of obesity and diabetes at the molecular level is helping the swift development of novel drugs in this area. This conference has been developed specifically to address the needs of industry and academic personnel currently developing such anti-obesity and diabetic therapies. It explores in detail what is known about obesity, type II diabetes, adipogenesis and insulin resistance and how this biological knowledge can be applied to the development of new therapies.
The Therm-Medic Therapy Mat was originally developed as a non-drug pain reliever for various types of pain, generally caused by arthritis, bursitis, muscular strain, and neuropathy pain usually associated with diabetes. At the conclusion of the pain relief study it was noted the participants who had type 2 diabetes had significantly lower blood sugar levels. Thus, in January 1999 Swift Technology Group began another phase of research into the beneficial effects for persons with diabetes, specifically with Type 2. (the study for Type 1 will follow in late 2000)
