In Memoriam.
 
E. B. Parvin was born in Cumberland County, New Jersey, May 10, 1809, and died at the Soldiers Home, Leavenworth, Kansas, April 18, 1893, at 3:45 p.m.   He was buried with military honors in the soldiers' cemetery at 3 p.m., April 2. (Note #1)
 
Father Parvin came to Columbus, Kansas, in company with his wife (Note #2) on September 10, 1874.   They made their home with their daughter, Mrs. A. A. Vaughan, on the west side of the square.   Mrs. Parvin died about three months after their arrival.
 
Mr. Parvin afterwards married Miss Mary Thompson, of Crestline, who died about five years since.
 
Father Parvin was for many years a traveling minister, of Methodist denomination; in politics, an old time whig.   He joined the republican party at its organization.   It was in his last years one of his proudest assertions to say he never voted the democratic ticket.
 
At the commencement of the Civil War (Note #3) he offered his services for the defense of his country and was accepted and assigned to Company D, 8th Missouri Infantry.
 
It was his request that he should be buried by his first wife, (Note #4) but owing to a mismanaged telegram to Mrs. A. A. Vaughan, (who at present resides in Hot Springs, Arkansas), she did not receive the request until he had been buried two hours.
 
Intentions are to exhume the remains and bring them to Columbus for interment.
 
Elam B. Parvin leaves seven children.   Two sons: E. A. and T. T. Parvin, Hot Springs, Arkansas; two daughters: Mrs. Laura Templeton, Oscaloosa, Iowa, and Mrs. A. A. Vaughan, of Columbus, Kansas; also three minor children, two boys (Note #5) and a girl, who are with their uncle, David Thompson, of Crestline, Kansas.

NOTES:
1) There must be some mistake here. Buried April 02, died April 18 ??
 
2) He was married to Hannah FITHIAN on September 03, 1831 in Philadelphia.   Hannah FITHIAN died about 1874 in Columbus, KS.
 
3) He enlisted on June 20, 1861, in Company G, 8th Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry, and was honorably discharged November 01, 1861.   (Bureau of Pensions, Number 857841).   These four months of active duty qualified him for a $12/month pension after the war.
 
4) "... be buried by his first wife" --- this apparently means buried beside his first wife. (I don't know whether or not his remains remained in the military cemetery @ Leavenworth).
 
5) The older of the two boys was Isaac Newton Parvin, Jerry Thomas's grandfather, born April 07, 1876 when Elam was 66 years old.

He is listed as being buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth County, Kansas.
