An Introduction to Literature - Ħal Qormi, 22.10.02

The Function of Literature

and the Role of the Reader

Inizjamed, in collaboration with the Ħal Qormi Local Council, is organizing a course of eight one-and-a-half hour sessions dealing with the function of literature and the fundamental role of the reader in the reading and "writing" of the literary text.

The course will focus mainly on short stories and novels and is meant for people who enjoy reading and would like to learn more about narration and its ability to redescribe reality. No qualifications whatsoever are required.

During the course, several leading and emerging novelists will be interviewed about their work and about the function of literature and the way the text communicates itself to the reader. The ideology behind the course is that once it is published, the text becomes "public property" and nobody has the right to monopolize the way it is interpreted, not even the writer who "created" it.

The course will be held in Maltese and starts on Tuesday, 22 October, 2002, at the San Bastjan Primary School B in Manwel Dimech Street, Ħal Qormi, and will be held on 8 consecutive Tuesdays between 6.00pm and 7.30pm.

The subsidized participation fee is Lm8 and light refreshments will be served at the end of every session to encourage the participants and the invited authors to continue exchanging their views on the topics raised. Those who attend the sessions on a regular basis and take active part will receive a certificate at the end of the course. Places are limited. People from outside Ħal Qorm are also invited to attend.

The authors who will be speaking during the course are Frans Sammut, Alfred Sant, Oliver Friggieri,  Immanuel Mifsud (far above), Henry Holland (left), Trevor Żahra (below), and Ġużč Stagno. The participants will be asked to read a particular text before the session in order to discuss it with its author and with the other participants.
