NEWS/INFO
===================================================================================

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Misc.Info:
---------------------------------------------------------------------

*Final Fantasy 7*
-----------------
-Sephiroth has a great origin! It's Hebrew for 'numbers' and is directly related
to Arabic 'sifra', French 'chiffre', German Ziffer', and English 'cipher'.
(Sanskrit 'shunya' meaning 'void', originally.) In Hebrew (among other alphabets),
each letter has a numerical value, and the art of adding the letters in a word or
phrase to get a certain value is called 'gematria'. In Hebrew, the word Sephiroth
has the value of 756; in Greek, 894. Can anyone find any significance in these
numbers? I was hoping to relate them to the safe combination in the Shinra Mansion,
but they don't seem to work. ^_^; Here are the ten important Sephiroth:
 1 - Kether, the Crown
 2 - Chokmah, Wisdom
 3 - Binah, Understanding
 4 - Geduldah, Greatness
 5 - Geburah, Strength
 6 - Tiphemeth, Beauty
7 - Netzach, Firmness and Victory
 8 - Hod, Splendor
 9 - Yesod, Foundation
 10 - Malkuth, the Kingdom
-The Ancients' original name, Cetra, could come from the Latin 'cetera', meaning
'others'... the Cetra were the 'other' race of people who originally populated
the Earth.
-The main city is named Midgar, just like Midgard in Norse mythology. It means
'earth'. Cloud's hometown is Nibelheim, which is the frozen hell. Another town
is Costa del Sol, which means 'sun coast'.
-Knights of the Round. This refers to King Arthur's twelve Knights of the Round
Table. Two of them were Uwain and Lancelot.
-Kjata is from the Bahamut legend. He's the bull with numerous body parts that
sits beneath the mountain, supporting the world.
-Hades, as you probably know, is another word for hell, or the underworld
[Hades is also the name of the Greek god of the underworld, as well as the
underworld itself -ed.].
-Costa del Sol is a real place, in Spain.
-Gunge Lance is a complete goof-up, it's really Gungnir (how they got Gunge Lance,
I don't have the slightest idea), which is Odin's spear.
-Lucrecia was a woman in Rome who got raped by the 7th king's (Tarqunius Superbus)
son, Sextus. It kind of makes sense, because in the game, there were hints that she
was raped by Hojo.

*Xenogears*
-----------
-In psychoanalysis, the Id is one of three parts of the mind; the other are the ego
and superego. The id represents the subconscious part of the mind, containing one's
instincts and repressed thoughts (the ego is your day-to-day thoughts, while the
superego is your overall beliefs).
-A Maitreya is an Indian prince... Maitreya is some guy on the Yggdrasil (there was
also a character called Maitreya in FF1, so maybe it's a reference to that).
-Shakhan and Khan (Fei's father) are both Mongol titles.
-Deus is just the Latin word for "god".
-There's an enemy in the Kislev sewers called Redrum; in Stephen King's "The Shining",
this is said repeatedly by the small boy. "Redrum" is simply "murder" spelled backwards.
-Kislev, Shevat (can also be spelled Shebat), Av (Aveh in the English version... d'oh),
and Nisan are all months of the Jewish calendar.
-Ethos is one of three methods of arguments in Greek (the other two being "Pathos"
and "Logos"). Logos was logic, Pathos was emotion, and Ethos means morality. Not too
surprising for a religion.
-Heimdal, Citan's Gear, is from Norse mythology, where Heimdall is the guardian on the
rainbow bridge of the gods. During Ragnarok, he blows a horn to assemble the gods and
heroes to fight the giants.
-The Soylent System is named after the classic science-fiction film Soylent Green.

*Final Fantasy Tactics*
-----------------------
-Beowulf, one of your companions, has the same name as the hero from the ancient
Anglo-Saxon legend. In the story, Beowulf kills Grendel, a monster who's been preying
on the people. [see the addendum for more info on Beowulf -ed.] -Wiegraf is one of
Beowulf's 'thanes', or warriors, in the Beowulf saga.
-The execution site where Ramza and Gafgarion duel is called Golgoralda, this may have
come from Golgotha, the 'killing field' where Christ was crucified [it's also so where
Ajora was executed].
-Some items: The perfumes that can be worn by female characters have French names.
Salty Rage means 'magic', Cherche means 'search for', and Chantage means 'blackmail.'
-Two of the knives are named Iga and Koga. These are the names of two ninja clans from
Japan. Another knife, Platina Dagger, just means platinum knife in German.
-The Goku Rod is named for Son Goku, the hero of an ancient Chinese tale. Son Gokuu
is also the name of one of the main characters in
the popular manga and anime series 'Dragon Ball' by Akira Toriyama.
-The Perseus Bow is named for the archer in Greek mythology.
-There's a sword named Save the Queen (Meliadoule has it); this is a line from the
British song 'God Save the Queen.' I don't think there's an actual sword with this
name, though. Another
possiblilty (see below) is that it's another reference to what is surely the producers'
favorite band.
-A shield named The Caesar Plate probably refers to the family that ruled Rome around
the time of the birth of Christ.
-The one-eyed Cyclops is a mythical beast in Greek myth which was created by Gaia and
locked up by her husband. Zeus,Gaia's grandson, freed them and three of the cyclops -
Stropes,Argos, and some other guys - forged Zeus's lightning bolt weapon for him. There
is also a myth about a cyclops in the legend of Odysseus, where he tricks it and gouges
its eye out. (Note: Cyclops appear in a number of games, but it's listed here because
it's the most promiment in FF Tactics).
-The Bizen Boat sword refers to a style of swordmaking created by Bizen Osafune Kanemitsu,
one of the 10 Students of Masamune.

*Saga Frontier*
---------------
-Koorong is supposed to be Kowloon (can they get any MORE incompetent?), which is a part
of Hong Kong. The real Kowloon is pretty similar to the one in the game (except without
all the slimes
and skeletons walking around, etc.)
-Baccarat is a card game, which makes sense for the name of a casino.
-Rouge is simply "red" in French. We will ignore the fact that Rouge doesn't have any
red on him, Blue has blonde hair, and Red has blue hair.
-Wondering why Uncle Taco (the octopus that repaired T260G) has such a silly name? It
actually comes from "tako", the Japanese word for octopus.
-Tartaros is a place in Greek mythology; it's located below Hades (the underworld) and
is where Zeus confined the Titans after the gods defeated them. Tartaros is commonly
used as a synonym for Hades, but they were actually different places.

*Tales of Destiny*
------------------
-Neuestadt just means "New City" in German. Heidelberg is also a real city in Germany.
-Aeropolis means "Air City" in Greek (aero = air, polis = city).
-The infamous Helraios may be a goof on Helios, the Greek god of the sun.
-You get call spells for Sylph, Wendiene (should be Undine), Gnome, and Efreet; although
mythological references, they are really just ripping off Secret of Mana's elementals
(the Tales series has a number of, uh, references to Square games).
-Janos is probably supposed to be Janus, seeing is how it's on the border of two countries
and has two "faces".
-Ishtar (part of the Tower of Druaga) quest comes from the legend of Gilgamesh; see the
FF5 section for his story.
-And speaking of the Tower of Druaga, the entire dungeon is basically a reproduction of
the classic (?) Namco arcade game titled Tower of Druaga.
