All Switch universities and some R&D institutions are today connected via ATM virtual connections and leased lines to the SWITCHlan backbone network and therefore also to the Internet. The backbone network currently consists of several ATM VPs with bandwidths between 4 Mbps and 16 Mbps as well as some lower-speed leased lines. IP Multicast is an extension to the IP protocol which allows individual packets to be sent to multiple hosts on the Internet, with packet replication done by the network. The Mbone is an overlay network on the Internet that supports IP Multicast. SWITCHlan connects several customer sites to the global Mbone and enables those sites to participate in public conferences transmitted over it, or to organize their own conferences on a national, continent- or world-wide scope. SWITCH has been participating in IPv6 Pilot experiment. IPv6 is the upcoming new version of the Internet Protocol (IP) The 6bone is an overlay network on the Internet which allows experimentation with this new protocol.
