Welcome to Issue 187, with an apology for those who access the News Page on the News Archive Page. I forgot to change the link for the 18th - 186 and so you would have got the 11th update instead. This has now been corrected.
This last week has seen a great deal happening our our area and I'm not sure where to start. The most significant event in Oxford has to be the withdrawal for modification of all of the Stagecoach Varios, following an accident in Manchester reported in several tabloid newspapers. It seems that a lady who expected to get of at stop by her home arrived somewhat nearer than expected. The brakes appeared to fail and the bus ended up in her front garden. Work has continued during the week on the Oxford batch and they are now re-entering service, 376 being seen on Friday.
Varios 377 and 374 receiving
attention last Wednesday prior to re-entering service.
A further newspaper article appeared in The Bucks Free Press on Friday when it was revealed that Arriva admitted serious service problems in High Wycombe. The state of the service and available buses to run same seems to much in question. Driver shortages are also quoted and a piece of news from Reading seems to bode ill for Wycombe if the same situation is replicated. The article posted by Vic Gackowski says :
I had a week's leave and enjoyed two turns on the Oxford express. In their way they both brought interest and even excitement. Thursday saw me on X70s to Heathrow with 27 and then 6, pictured below. however Friday proved to be the "exciting bit" when working an X90 London bound service with coach 4 at Hillingdon. I was somewhat non-plussed when arriving at Hillingdon to find THREE recovery vehicles in varying positions around the bus lay-by. As things developed it became clear that they were a group of re-possession merchants and they were involved in trying to recover a car driven by three young men. This car chased into the lay-by the wrong way and was trapped between two recovery trucks, my coach and the third recovery truck blocking his reversing out. I had a grand stand view as the car shot between me and the bus shelter, narrowly missing an intending passenger who later boarded my coach saying "are we on T.V.?" Fortunately no one was hurt, my coach was unscathed and I proceeded to London VCS on time.
Newman Morgan writes with some interesting news. He says.
This Saturday's
Oxford Mail contains a number of bus related articles.
Firstly, both OBC and SiO promise improved services following the
success of their respective recent recruitment campaigns. SiO have had
181 applicants since November including ex-teachers and sales managers, due to
the improved pay rates! SiO hopes to run a more reliable timetable.
OBC did not disclose recruitment figures bus says that it has enjoyed
similar success and extra services were now on the cards with the first area to
benefit being Kidlington.
Another article informs of a free bus service between Gloucester Green and
Oxpens for the duration of the closure of Glos. Green. The service starts 6am
Monday and runs every 20 minutes on a 24/7 basis. Temporary ticket office and
waiting room facilities will be in place at Oxpens.
A third article highlights SiBanbury by stating that staffing
difficulties have been overcome, the company has won back the B1/B2 roads and
has restructured fares including a £6 Megarider weekly ticket.
The Comments editorial reflects on SiO's successful recruitment campaign
but asks at what price? A 23% fares hike on the Oxford-Bicester road along with
a £1m increase in wages and reductions in country services are highlighted as
negatives and urges SiO to keep any fares rise in 2002 to a minimum.
The same edition also reports on Chiltern Railways possible decision to
axe first class seats on all its trains. The Turbo trains are about to undergo a
major overhaul and Chiltern are keen to include more seats on these trains.
There is a 40% occupancy rate.
Of interest because of potential impact on bus services in our area is a further report from Newman.
Friday's Oxford Times carried a headline report that Oxfordshire will be the first county in the country to benefit from tilting trains. It seems that Virgin's Super Voyagers are to be tested in service between Oxford and Banbury commencing this July. Despite the fact that Richard Branson lives at Kidlington, Railtrack state that the route was chosen for testing due to its curves. Virgin reckon than the 21 minute journey time Oxford-Banbury will be cut to 18 minutes. From May 2003 a full timetable of 125mph Super Voyagers will be operated by Virgin on its Brighton-Manchester/Liverpool and Poole/Portsmouth - Edinburgh services, all of which operate via Oxford. Trackside beacons will control the trains' speed and degree of tilt around bends.
Newman carries on
regarding Bicester - My local
freebie newspaper carried a gloss printed supplement entitled 'Gavray Drive'.
Now, Gavray Drive is a mile long road to nowhere built about 10 years ago next
to the Langford Village development where I live on the Aylesbury side of
Bicester. Gavray Drive, named after a village in Normandy that is twinned with
the adjacent village of Launton, parallels the Bicester-Marylebone railway line
and the open ground between the road and the track has always been earmarked for
industrial use. Now the owner, J J Gallaher Estates of Coventry propose a mix of
housing and offices. The significance of the brochure is that, for the first
time, it includes the proposed relocation of both Bicester North and Bicester
Town stations to a new location where the Marylebone line crosses the Oxford-Bletchley
line, on which passenger trains are said to be operating within two years. The
site includes a bus interchange and a large parking area for cars. The
site is situated right next to the Launton Road in Bicester.
The new single station will of course provide interchange between the current
Chiltern Railways service and the proposed Oxford-Bedford service and it
should be remembered that, if the Aylesbury-Claydon Junction-Bletchley route is
re-opened under Chiltern's 20 year franchise then it will also be possible for
Chiltern to run beyond Aylesbury via Claydon Junc to Bicester and Oxford.
I believe it will be at least 2005 before the new station is likely to be
operational.
In similar vain Vic Gackoski
writes "Tuesday's edition
of the Oxford Mail included the debate on 'Transport in Oxfordshire'.
This was absent from last week's edition. This week it concentrates on the
railways. There is a section entitled 'What's happening?' with a what?, why? and
progress report against each entry. Items included here are a new transport
interchange at Oxpens, Oxford to provide a 6-platform railway station along with
bus and taxi interchange. Proposals for a new Kidlington Station at Lyne
Road, Kidlington with a planning application to be submitted by the county
council this summer. Proposals for a new Parkway station at Grove and Wantage.
Re-opening of the Princes Risborough to Oxford line and a new station near the
M40. The Oxford-Witney rail link, which following recent recommendations, has
been more or less abandoned in favour of considerations for a light railway, a
guided bus route or the A40 bus lane. The Guided Transit Express which would use
redundant rail lines into Oxford and allow bus routes out to Abingdon, Witney,
Bicester and throughout Oxford to avoid traffic problems. Detailed proposals to
be submitted to Government this year. Expanded capacity at Didcot Parkway
station. The East-West Rail Link Oxford - Cambridge where the section between
Oxford and Bedford is to be restored for re-opening within the next 2 years.
There is another section on the train companies providing services through
Oxfordshire and a feature on the possibility of the merger of Thames Trains and
First Great Western to provide a single franchise operator into Paddington and
thus make better use of track and capacity. TT's franchise expires 2004 and FGW
in 2006. Both operators express a desire to be involved in any new single
franchise.
The main body of the article focuses on improving rail services over the next 10
years with scepticism that John Prescott's 10 year improvement plan will bypass
Oxon. Both Thames Trains and First Great Western have a reluctance to big
investment until their post-franchise renewal situation becomes clear.
Chiltern Railways comes out best with improved services since
privatisation and doubling of track to allow more frequent services.
A separate article in the same paper reports on the award by the SRA to Chiltern
Railways of the first 20 year franchise in return for a £371m investment.
Monday sees the transfer of express services in Oxford to temporary coach
station located by the Ice Rink at The Oxpens. Local services which
normally use Gloucester Green will operate from City Centre stops. Stagecoach in
Oxford have won a contract from the council to operate a shuttle service between
GG and The Oxpens. News of what is operating that service would be
appreciated.
Well on to the company news in our area.
News of the local companies - 24th February 2002
Arriva serving The Shires & Essex
A further week of yet more interesting arrivals were noted in Wycombe this week. As reported above the local paper produced a disturbing story of problems in Wycombe with Arriva services. Driver and vehicle shortages are blamed for the problems plus the hilly nature of the terrain which takes its toll on the buses used. Also the lack of low floor buses on the 303 was highlighted.

Merc Mini 2132 has gone to Cressex. that just leaves NBS
with 2127 & 2244 (both officially on loan to us). Lynx 3807 has indeed been withdrawn as mentioned yesterday. ( I was told that 2127 is also going to Cressex next week, leaving only 2224 in the minibus fleet.Ed.)Nigel Peach wrote following a
visit to NBS that lunchtime.
Unusual working lunchtime on

WYCOMBE BUS and its predecessors.
Matt Cooper writes - When I get a chance I would like to send you a few stories I have about Wycombe Bus. I lived in Wycombe from the age of 10 until 16 and was travelling on WBC for all that period and visited the bus station several times a week. But for now I would just like to mention that with all the recent changes the WBC allocation has seen the only remaining ex Berks Bucks vehicles are coach Olympians (D822-4 UTF) and Lynxes (F556-60 NJM) the latter have operated in HW for all their lives. (and now 557 is reported withdrawn Ed.)

Carousel Buses, High Wycombe
I passed two of Carousel's ex London Metrobus on Friday evening running up to London for rail replacement service. At the time I was working an X90 to London on Oxford express coach 4.
Oxford Bus (City of Oxford Motor Services)
News on the recently arrived Whitelaw Volvos is that 657, pictured above is now in the paintshop. both buses have had their seats removed for retrimming. They are expected to enter service in about 3-4 weeks. They were with
Whitelaw of Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. Also as advised in my week update the "swop" was a dealer situation and no Oxford buses have gone to Whitelaws. Indeed if you want an ex Oxford Dart you can buy one for just £31500 froim Fleetmaster. Interestingly Coach & Bus Week is also advertising the Metrobus ex Oxford Darts for sale. This bus seems due to be scattered to the four corners of our land.
This garage shot of "T1, T2 and T4 shows off the refurbished trainers, ex
WMPTE, now in use
for driver training in Oxford.
The traffic delays last Wednesday and Thursday on the M40/M25 southbound
junction slip
caused many problems for all using that section of road. Oxford Bus was no less
affected and
the sight of an X90 branded coach at Heathrow is not surprising. Often to
maintain service
coaches must be swopped on duties and this is how nr 6 ended at LHR -T4.
Unusual workings reported concern 651 on 15 road last Friday and coach 1 - X90 branded - on the X70 last Friday.
Motts
Matt Cooper writes further on Motts. He says - a few further notes about Motts Yellow Bus vehicles that were operated and of interest. Another point, if rather insignificant most vehicles in the early days were given fleet numbers, but in no logical order and as far as I am aware only the Metrobuses actually carried these small red stickers somewhere on their front end. Later on fleet numbers were simply the registration numbers i.e.L922 LJO was 922. The vehicles I wish to mention are,21 (D809 MNY) a Renault Dodge S56 with East Lancs body and DP24F seating acquired from Windsonian in 1992. Operated in YB livery but only used for a short while. Numbered 520 was (C52 HDT) a Dennis Dommino with Optare B33F body new in 1985 to South Yorkshire Transport and acquired by Motts in 1991. This ran for some time with Motts. Another DMS was (OJD 247R) which was not used in service but as a source of spares. It was always in LT red and spent some time dumped at the back of the Stoke Mandeville yard. Another interesting point to note is that whilst I was reading through a copy of "Londoners in Exile, DMS Worldwide" printed in 1984, I came across a piece in the index that shows "Motts Coaches (Aylesbury) Ltd. Upton, Bucks" acquired DMS 2226 (OJD 226R). I wonder what happened to the vehicle and how long it was with Motts for.
Pete Brown of Showbus fame writes -
Some late news for
possible inclusion into this weeks page is that Motts have ordered a new
Mercedes 0.815D / Beluga Sitcar after a successful demo by one.
Red Rose, Aylesbury.
Pete Brown writes - Also after last weeks question about who will have the first '02' registration in the area i expect it will be Red Rose whose new dart MPD which has been delivered but is just waiting till 1st March to enter service with its new select '02' registration! Incidentally, this bus is to be painted Gold for the Queens Golden Jubilee and hopefully in time for when she visits Aylesbury this year.

Banbury Olympian 963 reported as "going south" It
was half term last week so the Olympian (normally used on school duties) went to
Rugby for MOT. Presumably it was seen on its return after passing (I hope) the
test.
I was told Merc 422 was going from Witney to Banbury but did not see the bus in
service and (without going in) could not see it in the garage. 423 (Witney) was
at Horspath for attention, so has the transfer of 422 been delayed / cancelled
Keith Wood writes following my picture in Rugby
last week - DIRFT - Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

And yes no one uses the bus in Rugby (or Nuneaton) on a Sunday ! Nuneaton and

Vario 374 is now back in service,
but all Stagecoach Varios were withdrawn from use after a brake problem on 2 in
Manchester. All vehicles were adjusted within 3 days. No other companies appear
to have withdrawn all the buses in the same manner.
Oxpens replaces Gloucester Green for 4 weeks whilst resurfacing takes place.
Vario 374 is planned to run a 20 minute free shuttle between the 2 places on
contract from the council all day, plus a less frequent service all night.
The Oxpens coach station has reduced the space for coach and lorry parking at
the back of the coach park with numbered bays for the main operators. On
Saturday however the Portacabins installed were overlapping 2 of the bays so it
will be interesting to see how they cope on Monday.
Stagecoach 907 has returned from repaint and 935 has now gone.
Vic Gackoski has been
extremely busy and one of you wrote a few weeks ago to ask when we might expect
his altest offering on route analysis. Well here THEY are. I hope you enjoy them

Oxford - Woodstock - Chipping Norton
Operations Survey
Monday to Friday Services
February 2002
By Vic Gackowski
DISCLAIMER - THIS SURVEY HAS NOT BEEN ENDORSED BY STAGECOACH-in-OXFORD AND IS PURELY BASED ON THE AUTHORS OWN RESEARCH.
Introduction
From Monday 11th February 2002 the through 50 road service between Oxford and Stratford Upon Avon was withdrawn and split in two at Chipping Norton. SiO now operate the Oxford to Chipping Norton section with SiW (Leamington Garage) operating the continuation northwards. All journeys operated by SiO from Oxford to Woodstock and Chipping Norton are now 20 road whilst SiW retains the road number 50 for its journeys. Although the two services are intended to connect, a close look at the timetable will reveal some extended waits of well in excess of thirty minutes in Chipping Norton on some journeys. The SiO timetable details the SiW 50 road but unlike the old timetable does not detail any journeys extending to and from Alster Grammar School. The Friday Journeys by Pete's Travel are also missing. The SiW vehicles only have a five minute turnaround in Chipping Norton so lets hope timekeeping is good. Although this survey details weekday workings it is worth noting that on Sundays and Bank Holidays four through journeys are operated between Oxford and Stratford Upon Avon. It appears to me that SiO were in a bit of a hurry to produce the new timetable. 42 and X8 roads which although mentioned on the front and are key connecting services with 20 road at Woodstock and Chipping Norton are not in the timetable. They were there in the old one.
Operations
The first thing for card watchers to note is that Double Deck operation on the Oxford to Woodstock and Chipping Norton road has ceased. Olympian 527 had become the road regular but this has now returned to SiW at Leamington. Towards the end a second Olympian had been resident at Chipping Norton. With the new timetable Chipping Norton stalwarts 901 , 902 and 903 are now back at the outstation and are joined in Oxford by two Darts from Witney Garage to maintain the core timetable. Dennis Lance’s 901 - 3 have always been associated with the Chipping Norton outstation since they arrived but during the previous timetable two of these could often be seen working from Horspath Road on city routes 1 , 3 and 7 whilst 9xx Volvos worked to Stratford Upon Avon with 527. It would be great to see these in the new livery , even with 20 road branding. On a personal note at least two of Chippy's long standing drivers drove me to school from Old Woodstock on the old 44 road back in the seventies and I have always had an affinity with that outstation which of course used to be a proper garage and works back in the COMS / SM days. In addition to the five core vehicles working the road there is also a requirement for another Witney vehicle to operate a single morning journey from Woodstock and one late in the evening. One Oxford Dart operates a round trip at 1615 from Oxford to Old Woodstock and return. The previous timetable required seven core vehicles , 2 ex Stratford , 2 ex Chipping Norton , 2 ex Witney and 1 ex Oxford whilst the new one requires 3 , ex Chipping Norton and 2 ex Witney. Oxford ceases to provide a core vehicle and in order to compensate at Chipping Norton for it returning to 3 vehicles the 488 road Mini Bus has now returned to SiB. The Stratford Upon Avon outstation has closed.

Temporary Withdrawal of SiO Vario fleet
Following the withdrawal of the SiO Vario fleet , as detailed in the mid week update , the following observations of some Vario cards were made on Tuesday 19th February. The Dart from Nuneaton , 107 - K 705 PCN , detailed in the update as having been observed on Bicester routes was not sighted at all on Tuesday. In addition all other minibus types seen in Oxford on Tuesday are detailed.
X3 Milton Under Wychwood to Oxford
Normally two Witney Varios -
Darts 725 (WY) and 726 (WY) were covering all day.
25 / 25A Bicester to Oxford (Via Villages)
Core hourly service (Excludes peak journeys)
Normally two Oxford Varios -
Darts 752 (OX) and 758 (OX) were covering the bulk of the day. From 1500 758 was replaced by 455 (WY) due to a mechanical fault. 752 continued on its card.
33 / 44 Oxford to Abingdon / Didcot (Via Villages)
An up to date survey of these working has not been made since the withdrawal of the 34 Oxford to Newbury service in 2001. In the previous timetable five vehicles were in use on these services with three Oxford Varios being involved. Two other Mini Buses which started thier day on 25 road peak journeys completed the allocation. The current estimate is for four vehicles of which two are Varios.
On Tuesday the two off Bicester workings were 306 (ex WY reported as withdrawn to Nuneaton) and 461 (OX) for many weeks on Staff Bus workings and now reported as withdrawn to Nuneaton.
The only other vehicle seen on these workings was Dart 778 (OX) obviously covering for a Vario. It is estimated that one further Dart was in use on these workings covering for the other Vario.
Other Vario Cards
The remaining Vario card is 64 road from Witney / Carterton to Swindon which was not observed. 488 Road from Chipping Norton to Banbury had latterly been a Witney Vario but from the 11th February this has become a SiB allocation.

Thames Travel.
Newman Morgan reports -
Just a brief note to report that
Thursday's edition of the Oxford Mail carried a report on the possible
withdrawal of Thames Travel's Jericho leg of the X39 when current funding runs
out in April 2002. Oxon CC pays TT £118 per day to operate the service and TT
are currently doing a passenger count on each journey to see how many people use
it. The service will terminate if no bids are received or if the bids are too
high. The service was taken over in 1999 when OBC gave up their commercial route
61 as unprofitable.
The report also states that the County Council has concluded public consultation
on this and several other routes but it was likely to be summer before tenders
had been agreed. The County Council make proposals in the light of what money is
available.
Vic Gackowski notes that - Thames Trains
Liveried X 49 VVY seen working in Oxford City on Tuesday 19th on 0715 Henley to
Jericho X39 service and return with the 0837 Jericho to Wallingford. Route
branded 132 for the Goring Rail Link but not out of place in Oxford as Thames
Trains serve here as well.
WATLINGTON and some interesting facts from Vic Gackowski - including some information on COMS allocations.
Although you say Stokenchurch operated early morning services and no doubt did there was a Garage at Watlington operated by COMS. It was in Couching Street and the allocation letters were - WN
Allocations in my records are -
December 1975
21 Bristol / ECW LJB 421 E
22 Bristol / ECW LJB 422 E
23 Bristol / ECW LJB 423 E
September 1976
382 Daimler Fleetline / NC MJO 382 H
383 Daimler Fleetline / NC MJO 383 H
September 1978
Allocation down to 3 vehicles but these were allocated from the Oxford (OD)
allocation. The garage code WN ceased to be used.
Watlington Garage closed around 1986
Also for info my records for Stokenchurch are - Garage Code - SH
December 1975 -
651 Ford / Wk NWL 651 M
652 Ford / Wk NWL 652 M
653 Ford / Wk NWL 653 M
September 1976
Just one vehicle on file -
654 Ford / Wk NWL 654 M
September 1978
Allocation just 1 vehicle but this was allocated from the Oxford (OD) allocation. The garage code SH ceased to be used.
I do not know when COMS ceased to use Stokenchurch but it had gone by 1985
Whites of Abingdon.
This company operates the 30 to Abingdon from Oxford and has just received a second hand Dart/Carlyle G47TGW. Several of you including Tracey wrote to advise me. It is seen below passing a 35A bound for Didcot via Abingdon. Oxford Bus nr 613.
Vic Gackowski writes - Further to recent reports on the page new services were due to start on the 18th -
Whites Coaches are providing the 98 hourly from Berinsfield and Long Wittenham to Didcot. In the peaks this service will also run to Milton Park and Culham Labs.
Abingdon Mini Coaches are providing the 141 hourly which will link North and South Moreton Villages plus the Astons with the 98 detailed above.
The services are the result of a £90,000 grant from the Countryside Agency with additional support from South Oxfordshire District Council.
Whites have an acquired vehicle working the X30 from Peachcroft to Oxford. (see photo above Ed.) It is Chocolate and Cream , very GWR.
Ralph Adams writes tonight
(Sunday) The service 30 (Whytes or
Whites?) has 2 new buses in the last 2 weeks. H947JPA, a MB709 with RB
25 seat bodywork, plus G47TGW a Dart 8.5 28 seat body. Both were the
same livery - cream with maroon lining. Is this the new fleet livery or were
they both bought from the same source?.

Coopers Tours of Sheffield Leyland
Tiger/Plaxton Paramount 3500 PJI2457 was in town
on Sunday morning. It is one of the few coaches I have seen recently to be
adorned with
full Leyland style wheel trims, both front and back.
Once upon a time the Volvo/Ikarus combination reigned
supreme in Gloucester Green but is
now seen only
occasionally when a DAF chassis variety works a National Express diagram.
S248JUA leaves Gloucester Green on Friday. I was unable to see the route or
