The Oxford Tube started on March 7th 1987 with an initial fleet of 8 Leyland Tigers, all of which were provided by Devon General. There was a basic half hourly service during the day and the day return fare was £2.97. The coaches were fitted with toilets, telephones and had a hostess refreshment service.

The service has come a long way during the last ten or so years and today at peak times there is a coach every twelve minutes. The coaches are still all fitted with toilets but the hostess service was discontinued after only a short time.

A brand new fleet of 28 MAN double deck coaches with Jonckheere bodywork is now almost fully in service. Listed below is the current fleet.

Monday 29th March 1999 saw the launch of the new MAN Double Deck Coaches, when 36, T36 DFC, was presented to the public at an unveiling ceremony at Market Square, Gloucester Green. This coach represented a dramatic step forward for the company and the fleet of 27 sees an investment of £5.5 million. There is a special page devoted to this event with a number of photographs of the new vehicle. There is also a page covering the service launch.

These fine coaches have been recently been joined by a further example, fleet number 66.  TV advertising has also appeared, being fitted to 45 in the first instance.
