Coming events:

As I was in Collingwood this week (July 5-7) I took the opportunity to drop into Mountain Springs Lodge, again the destination for our MSCCC Fall Weekend. A reminder the dates are October 1-3. Later than usual to get around conflicts with the Sept 11-12 Watkins Glen Weekend, Sept 19 British Car Day, and Sept 17-19 British Invasion in Stowe. Mountain Springs had not received any requests for rooms from our illustrious Morgan group as yet (but did have 2 bookings from the MGCCT who are combining their Wayne McRae Memorial Weekend with our Fall Weekend at the same time / same venue). Dig out your 3-99 Blurb for the flyer, or make a copy of the flyer from this issue. For choice locations, book early by calling 800-704-8633 and mention the "Morgan Car Club". This year we will be holding our "awards" dinner in the new dining room of the main lodge at Mountain Springs to allow for enjoyment of all those who attend (no Morgans / MG‘s storming back to the lodge after a fun filled evening up the road!). The MGCCT will be organizing the Saturday "tour", MSCCC is responsible for the fun concours and gymkhana. We will be repeating the Martini contest with the defending champ (ie, VDJ) as "head judge". Please send me your registration for the weekend by letter, fax, or email so I know who is attending the weekend! (fax 905-826-6643, email as above).

Peter & Heather McCowan will be hosting our MSCCC summer "beefout" for Toronto area Morganeers (and invited guests). Date is August 14..... mark you calendars now and be prepared for a great afternoon and evening. Please call Heather McCowan to confirm your attendance and to coordinate the "pot luck" menu (905-857-3210).

The British Car Toy Run will be organized by the British Saloon Car Club of Canada (BSCCOC). Date has been set for Sunday Sept 26th. They will need help -- those who can please contact Roger Tipple 905-632-6582 tipple@procor.com or Dave & Elva Allen 519-367-5854 elva@log.on.ca A worthy cause will be supported and a guaranteed great time will be had by all.

Over the past few issues I’ve mentioned an Italian Morgan Driver’s Club effort to tour the US in the year 2000. Unfortunately it appears bureaucratic problems getting their Morgans out of Italy and into the US (or the reverse) have caused this effort to be "shelved". Aldo Agati extends his regrets. There will still be a Morgan’s Over America organized by Richard & Anita Jordan of the UK. See the events listing for their contact information. It is scheduled for Sept-October 2000 and is expected to run from New Orleans to Halifax. Stuart Clare, MSCCC member resident in Halifax has shown interest in at least participating in the Canadian portion of the tour and would like to hear from others who are planning on participating (so, by the way, would I -- these chances only come around once and I regret not taking in the entire MoA experience in 1990). Stuart can be contacted at clarest@gov.ns.ca

Subject: SunAlliance Rally 2000 From: Gary Moles (morgannz@xtra.co.nz)

An international classic car rally being held in New Zealand next February - some may have heard of it. I'm just wondering if any three-wheeler owners from overseas are likely to be attending? At the moment we have one coming from UK (with car) in addition to (hopefully) five New Zealand cars. These will be in addition to all those who need the fourth wheel to balance on although I've had no indication of how many from the New Zealand fraternity are attending. Any overseas Morgan owner likely to be attending is welcome to contact me for details. I gather the organisers are hoping for a total of 2000 cars. Best regards to all Gary

Morgan Memorabilia:

Our millennium rerun of badges with a "yellow" Morgan, number M01 to M50, and dated 2000 is effectively "sold out". I have only 3 of the 30 purchased by the club left. Lapel pins are also moving fast. These are 1 inch in diameter and of the same quality as the badge with a "brooch" closing. Badges are priced at C$80 (US$55) plus shipping while the pins will be C$12 (US$8) plus shipping. Orders should be sent to VDJ (see back for address). Also, don’t forget you can still have your favourite shirt or other item of clothing embroidered with the MSCCC badge. Send this in to VDJ, with $10 and return postage, and we’ll have it embroidered. If you can’t wait, we’ve some crests available, assorted colors, for $10 each again, plus postage.

Norm Jolin, MSCCC member in Halifax, has asked if we have an interest in high quality crystal "Morgan" items (reminds me of the set of wine glasses I obtained from Rudi Rencoret of the Australian club -- set of 12, each with a hand engraved Morgan, definitely a hit at dinner parties!). Norm sent through a catalogue from Nova Scotia crystal with samples. Perhaps an appropriate paper-weight with appropriate Morgan (+4, 4 str??) engraved in same? Any interest? Norm also has access to an upscale pewter shop (higher quality reproductions than the Seagull items now out of production). If we looked for one pewter item, what would it be? My vote is a Morgan mounted on a glass bottomed pewter beer-mug using the same "emboss" as a fridge magnet come "mount me anywhere you like with a bit of epoxy" emblem. One I’m particularly fond of is an early plaster +8 Mog front profile. Any suggestions??

I rec’d a call from Buzz Lorch of Automobilia in New York (phone 914-639-6806, lustron@worldnet.att.net) advising the 2 new Brumm MX4 Barrelback 1:43 scale models are available through them. Price is US$21.50 each plus shipping. Model 292 has the top down, model 293 has the top up. Cliff Baker, in the latest Miscellany indicates there are in fact 8 different versions of this new model, each of the above is available in 4 color patterns, engine is a Matchless.

June 13th Escarpment Run: by Winston (Hairy) HogMog

There has been interest expressed of late in events. Herein I submit my report.

Last Sunday, June 13, the MSCCC staged another in its Escarpment Run sequels. The original host of the prior year Runs had suffered a stroke & was recuperating. To the rescue, long-time members Ray & Mary Shier stepped in to save the day. Members & guests brought what was road worthy. This included 6 Morgans, Bugatti, Jaguar saloon, Miata, Mustang, TR3, MGA, and a 1940's Hudson; among assorted late-model daily drivers.

"Founding Father" Al Sands flashed his custom made teeth that would have done Austin Powers proud! Says he to the waitress at the Queen's Head Pub: "Do you serve corn on the cob"? It was refreshing to have a number of young people involved & enthused about this event, given that we are generally a grey-haired lot! The Run was both a scenic tour followed by a rally, for those braver souls. The questions were relatively easy on the rally. Despite having the blessing (?) of 2 navigators, your humble scribe finished 3rd - receiving a pair of work gloves, to get a better grip on the "3 quick right turns" (which equaled a left). Winner of the auspicious event was the Past Prez of the Toronto Triumph Club, members Malcolm & Brenda Taylor.

Participants settled down to food & drink at a BBQ hosted by the Shier's. As has become custom, Prez Vern D-J awarded a gift to the Shier's (including Rally Master Tim) for their efforts.

On the Friday prior, your scribe & Hellen Hogmog were joined by several friends from the MG Club of Toronto, in MGs, at a local cigar get-together, to share a common interest in cars, cigars, & fine spirits. A most pleasant impromptu evening!

This weekend, for those not in Rhinebeck, there are a few items of note. MSCCC member Paul Whittaker is hosting a Canada Day Rally under the MG Club banner. We hope the Morgans are competitive! On Sunday, is the annual Classics Against Cancer Car Show, founded by member Neil Young. No doubt Vern, The Shiers, & others will once again be among the several hundred cars who support this fine cause! Details may be found at the Morgan site below.

Signing off from the social center of the Great White North. Hope all your events are safe & happy ones!

Faithfully,
Harry "Winston" Hogmog, Esquire DSM (Distinguished Service Morgan-"Hogmogateers")

Subject: Rhinemog: by Jim Nichol (jhalfdime@aol.com) and Glenn Nigh (wms@vaxxine.com)

The following report is from Jim Nichol who organized the Morgan showing at Rhinebeck Aerodrome on June 19. Attended by trusty MSCCCers Glenn Nigh and Chris Taylor, their letter to Jim sums up feelings of a great weekend.

A perfect day, a perfect place, and a perfect group of Morganeers! Today's Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome get-together could not have been more perfect. A total of twenty seven Morgans graced the Aerodrome's grassy courtyard area along with a smaller number of MGs, Jaguars, and a lone Porsche. The Malvern contingent consisted of five "proper" Morgans along with twenty two "harder-to-get-up-on-two-wheels" variety. Among the trikes was Tony Souza's pristine and strong running '31 JAP Super Sport, Jeff Jacobson's racy '36 MX-2 Super Sport, the Aerodrome's own '34 MX-2 Sports 2 Seater, John Moir's '28 (?) MAG engined Aero, and Jim Nichol's '28 Anzani Aero.

Among the 4 wheelers was Canadian visitor Glenn Nigh's gorgeous '62 +4 roadster, Paul Littell's BRG +4 DHC, Art & Jerri Colby's 4/4 from Rhode Island, Dean Meyer's drop-dead beautifully done +4 4 seater, and a doze and a half other flat rads, 4/4s, +4s, and +8s.

The weather could not have cooperated more, the Aerodrome staff, headed by curator Jim Hare were more than helpful, and the stars of the day, those vintage aeroplanes, cooperated fully, enthralling even the most jaded with their flights. The oldest flying aeroplane in the world, the Aerodrome's Anzani engined Bleriot IX was kept near the ground by the gusty crosswinds as was the Antoinette replica, but a host of vintage machinery, ranging from a Curtiss Pusher to a PT-17 Stearman. Low and slow was pretty much the rule of the day as original sport planes from the '20s and '30s tiptoed by us. When were you fortunate enough to be able to see, not a hundred feet up, or a hundred feet away, an Aeronca C-3, a Curtiss Junior, a Davis D-1W, a 1928 New Standard, and more, all fly on the same day?

Following the airshow, most of us met for dinner in nearby Rhinebeck to renew old friendships, swap Morgan horror-stories, or just recall our mutual enjoyment of the products of HFS and PHG Morgan. Truly a magical day and one that I thank all who participated for making it such a success!

Cheers & Happy Morganing, Jim Nichol

Jim:
Hope you managed to get your wind back after such a busy weekend. You where right when you said we would have good weather. Fantastic I'd say. I wanted to tell you that we had a great time and thank you for the invitation to Rhinemog. I guess if we had any regrets it would be that there was so little time to see so much. I do wish I had been able to put more names to the cars and owners but I’m sure that will come with time. The number and quality of cars was amazing, and to see the number of three wheelers in one place was great too. Both Chris and I enjoyed the dinner and visitation after the airshow.

You may remember that we came down in a motorhome and stayed at a KOA campground Saugerties/Woodstock. From there we did the trip 212, 214, 23A, 212 in the Morgan and found it a great ride. We wanted to stop all along the way but of course did not have time. What a great place to visit! Another time for sure. We loaded " MOG GN " onto the trailer about 8:30 Sunday evening and prepared for the return trip to Canada on Monday morning. We had no problems at all throughout the whole stay in the USA.

Jim , a special thanks to those that were at Rhinemog -- hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, to those who missed it try to make it another time. To all, thank you for the typical American hospitality we received to make this a most enjoyable weekend. Cheers, Glenn Nigh (+4 # 5112 ) & Chris Taylor (75 Spitfire)

Classics Against Cancer: Vern Dale-Johnson (vern_dj@msn.com)

We had a good day at Classics Against Cancer in Georgetown Ontario with 4 Morgans (Shiers, DJ’s, Andrews and Sands) along with members Malcolm & Brenda Taylor (TR3), Paul Whittaker (Buggati replica), and Neil & Ruth Young (Super 7) so... a respectable turnout. No awards for our vehicles. The Brit class was split into "up to 66", and "67-74". Both classes were very well attended. A newly refinished 66 E-type roadster took first in the pre 66 class and best of show. The owners may be joining the MSCCC. Second was a 64 Jag E-type and third was John Keen's 50 MGTD. In the post 66 class first was a TR6, followed by two more E-types. Total vehicles on the field were down this year, might be due to a rather late mailing to former attendees and an outdated web-site. We obviously did our part to get the British stock out! Overall, still a great event for a great cause.

Regards, Vern DJ (66 +4 # 6952)

Empire Day at 50 Point: Vern Dale-Johnson (vern_dj@msn.com)

Another gorgeous day! We arrived early (entry #22) and thus got a free lunch ticket. Although the wait was long the "meat pie" was edible and I did show visiting brother-in-law Colin that I had learned how to eat a meat pie without a fork or serviette! On the field a respectable showing of Brits. The Morgans that showed included Gary McFarlane (sporting his new Millennium MSCCC badge), Glenn Nigh freshly washed after the Rhinemog weekend, Brian & Brenda Morgan, and Ray & Mary Shier. That made 4 RHD Mogs with our +4 being the lone left hooker. Comments from the crowd were interesting "did you convert it for Canada?" Other members who arrived included Chris & Gayle Taylor with their Spitfire, and Ken Lumb who was playing with the Peel Regional Police band who stopped by with his son for a chat. Much pressure there to get the +8 back on the road -- similar to a discussion I’ve had recently with Norm Hendryks (and his son Jeffery) who now have their +8 back on the road -- I’d half expected to see the Hendryk’s at 50 point but..... seems Jeffery has to do some more coaxing... We’re hopeing to see both these +8’s at the McCowans "beef out in August.

Vern: We did have a great time at the 50 point ' Empire Day " gathering here off of lake Ontario. Rain threatened all day but held off for the event . The breeze was very nice along with the shade trees. All kinds of events going on all day, lots of British cars, 6 Morgans (ed note -- someone must have arrived after our departure?). I did not get to see everything but there was a pipe band , a solo piper , other music, crafts, food, for sale items, to name a few . A well organized affair, worth a trip if anyone is within driving distance of the area next year. Cheers, Glenn Nigh

Notes from the West: Ron Theroux (ronsmog@home.com)

VanDusen All Brit from 5 perspectives

THE PLUS 4s…..from Gil Stegen…..

Saturday was a grand day for the classic Morgans, the Plus 4’s. The day started at 8:30 AM with a small contingent of +4’s lead by Hal Meden and of course the Jewett Peerless. The rest of the pack arrived at a more dignified hour of 9:30 AM, resulting in 10 +4’s (2.2% of all show cars present) and of course the Peerless. The cars were all bright and shining, at least until the tree sap settled upon us (it seems that VanDusen is destined to become a Botanical Park, decidedly paint unfriendly). From the top of the ridge we had the Theroux ‘59 4-place, Stegen’s ‘67 DHC, Hal Meden’s ‘62 DHC with 62k original chassis miles, the Coulthard ‘60 roadster with ONLY 34,000 miles, and Wayne Harris brought his cute red ‘58 roadster all the way up from McMinnville, OR. Proceeding down the line we found the unrestored ‘64 4-place of Larry Emrick, and then the famous Runions three wheeler (those rose bushes are tough on tires) ‘62 roadster, El Presidente showed his ‘53 flat line 4-place (always a crowd pleaser). The field was completed by Steve Hutchins’ ‘63 cream/BRG 4-place (first time shown, all the way from Nebraska) , Button’s ‘64 4-place, and of course the Peerless somewhere in the flowers. The award winners were in order, the Theroux burgundy 4-place, Emrick’s unrestored 4-place, and Meden’s Drop Head Coupe, but alas, no Peerless.

THE THREE WHEELERS…..from Les Burkholder…..

Saturday May 22 was a beautiful sunny day and all the Morgans were at their best, glistening in the sun. In Class 35, Pre War Sports which includes Morgan Three Wheelers, there was a great showing of three, where we normally have none or maybe one. Rather than being stuck over with all the other strange breeds, we parked the Three Wheelers with the Morgans, where they should be. After all, they are the Grandfathers of all the other Morgans, and you wouldn't ostracize your Grandfather would you? There was Brian Pollock of Mercer Island Wa. in his 1934 Super Sport, JAP Engine, Beetle Back body Cream with Burgundy coloured fenders. Brian has had two previous Three Wheelers, and this present one is a beauty. He has owned this one for three to four years. I don't know if you noticed on his streering wheel controls, he had a rubber band for tension. Interesting accessory. He says that he plans to replace it with a spring washer. Pete Gagan and wife Mary Jane of White Rock B.C. arrived in their 1933 Super Sport, JAP Engine, Beetle Back body coloured red. Like Brians, Pete's car was beautifully restored. In 1992 Pete bought this car in Royal Tumbrige Wells, England. It was a little scruffy, says Mary Jane. The car was restored and they toured England for the next five years. Pete entered three Irish Rallies, that Pete says "A real peel your tire off, and great fun". Another outstanding tour was the Tour of Brittany, off the coast of France. It is nice to see these cars are being used and enjoyed as they should. If you noticed on Pete's steering wheel, he has an extra lever. This is for decompressing the cylinders when starting. You open the valve, get the engine turning freely, close the valve and the engine starts with the traditional beautiful sound Put, Put, Put. I liked Pete's very British tweed cap. Hope to have Pete and

Mary Jane out on many of our runs. Then there was Burkholder that was bursting to tell every one prior to VanDusen that he had purchased a Three Wheeler the first of March and took delivery in Gibsons on the first of May of this year. Normally Burkholder cannot keep a secret, so this was really something. The car was purchased from an old friend, Dave Elcomb of Kingsville, Ont.. Back in the early 50’s Dave was my navigator as we rallied and toured Southern Ontario in the Windsor area, and in much of Michigan . We were at that time members of the Essex County Sports Car Club. The car is a 1932 Super Sport, Beetle Back, colour red, with a JAP 1100cc competition engine. The Three Wheeler was raced in England, and Dave raced it the for last 23 years with VARAC in Canada,

and also down the east coast of the US as far as Pittsburgh. Dave enjoyed his racing. In 1989 racing at Shannonville, Ont. he was successfully passing a twin cam MGA , when he lost the left cylinder, bits and oil were flying everywhere. Dave is an excellent machinist and had the car ready for racing again the following year. He says that when you get up to 80 to 90 MPH it tends to float. Hold your arms out and you would take off. Dave found the Three Wheeler in Devon England IN 1967. The car was in a barn, suspended from the rafters, over two Rolls Royce's. They lowered it down, installed a new battery, filled it with gas, oil, water, and drove it away. He has enjoyed the car for the last 32 years, and he now finds it difficult to get in and out of. He wanted a good home for it to go to, as it is like family. They still will have visiting rights. Did you know that JAP stands for Jams A. Prestwick, the designer of the Engine?

THE PLUS 8s…..from Ken Miles…..

May 22nd arrived and Van Dusen was upon us with sunny skies and higher temperatures than we had of late. The Plus 8’s of Stu Rocca, Heinz Stromquist, Ted Carew-Gibson, Al Alinson, Ken Miles, Ron Weiskind, and Brooke Barnes for a total of seven had arrived to show their muscles to all and sundry. Ron’s new car, a nice shade of blue did draw some interest, especially when it was learned he might be prepared to sell his other latest acquisition. After many hours of fierce and at times verbal competition, the following three cars were victorious in descending order: Miles, Alinson, and Weiskind.

THE 4/4s…..from Jonathan Russell…..

Was it an indication that the monsoon season was over? Fourteen Morgan 4/4s adorning the lawns of Van Dusen. From 1962 to 1992, 4 place, 2 place, wide body, narrow body with colours to compliment the floral backdrop. In no particular order, there was John Rennie (1969), Dave Collis (1963), Ted Laturnus (1970), Claire and Bob Hauge (1962), Carmel and Woody Thomson (1968), Pat Miles (1968), Larry Sharpe (1970), June and Les "the King" Burkholder (1968), Ric MacDonald (1965), Michael "the badge" Powley (1972), Dale and Jonathan Russell (1992), Marilyn Rulka (1968), Marianne and Michael Povey (1970), Trisha and Leo Lee (1971).

The sun also brought out Malcolm Buffum, Jean and Jack Tinnea, Pam and Gary Bell and Mark Reutlinger. Special mention should be made of Val and Graham Bailey and their grill, the balance of the car being elsewhere! The People's Choice awards went to Pat Miles, Larry Sharpe and Leo Lee. The big question of the day was how Les and June Burkholder could (a) keep a secret so long and (b) contain their smiles when driving the 1932 J.A.P. Super Sport Trike, aka Red Ducky, into the gardens at Van Dusen. Impressive! After an enjoyable day in the gardens, back to the Theroux's for a very enjoyable evening with friends, some there and some not.

THE POST FUNCTION DINNER PARTY…..from Ron Theroux…..

VanDusen after party....or "Sure, you can park on my grass"....We are sure all the drivers who attended the Vancouver ABFM have been acknowledged in other articles. How about the members that did make it to the Meet, but getting there without their trusty steeds. Bob and Judy McDiarmid, Gary Van Hook, Jack and Jean Tinnea, Graham and Val Bailey with a tale of woe to tell of their great DHC and pot holes. And yes, there again was Harry Miltner, seen hanging out with the MG gang, keeping company with Malcolm Buffum. Off on his own part of the field was Glenn Jewett trying to explain what a Peerless was and "No, I did not build it myself". New member Michael Geluch was there, still looking for a car. Steve and Liz Blake were also present with their new MGTC. I am told they have sold the thirties Plymouth pickup, and are now in hot pursuit of a Morgan. Our faithful Gary and Pam Bell with Dale Russell were working the regalia tent, just as Nancy would have wanted it. Robert and Sidney Couch were here for their first visit to Vancouver. One of our younger members, David McCrossan was seen checking out the cars with Evan Carew-Gibson. Also met soon-to-be new members Win and Christine Muehling; they pick up a Plus 8 from Calgary in mid June. Oh yes, dinner, with all of the members with and without cars, it is difficult to plan how many are coming for dinner. We do work with a budget from the club that has this year been raised to $300US plus the funds from the Tiger Club at $5 per person (plus showing up with the chicken wings, rice salads and other appetizers). For the past four years we have had to play a guessing game as to how many will attend. We have always ordered more steaks, deducting leftovers from the final bill. With eighty plus attending it would appear we underestimated some of the side dishes and salads, but with the help of many, we made it up at the dessert table. The galley staff busted their buns (pun intended) for 3 days and were the last to chow down. We can't forget our super grill masters Big Al Allinson and his side kick Graham Bailey, they just keep getting better each year. How many of us can say we can still cook with charcoal? Each year is a learning experience....and can someone tell us why for two of the past three years we have had the potatoes turn black in the center? Bob Adair, where were you? There was a rumor you might be heading up here and for your special diet we had OREO cookies! The one thing we have missed with hosting these dinners for the past four years, is not having the time to visit with so many of the members that we see but once a year.

Members in the news:

Back in early May, Vern Dale-Johnson received a call from Maryanna Lewyckyj who writes a "Celebrity Wheels" column for DriverSource. she was after a Morgan to use in a photo shoot with TV Chef, Graham Kerr, the "Galloping Gourmet". How could we refuse? OLBDII’s and Vern met up with Graham and his wife Trina outside the Crown Plaza and after a few quick pleasantries they were off, with Graham in the second seat, to the shoot location outside Toronto City Hall. Great fun. Graham, who lives in Seattle told the not unfamiliar story of "being struck by a Morgan" -- this time it was a yellow Morgan on the wharf in Victoria a couple of year’s ago (Westcoasters you’ve done it again!). After the shoot, and a gift of a Toy Run poster and Blurb issues, Graham and Trina were on their way with, of course, contact info for the MOG NW group. Hope they take the plunge.....

Subject: Blonde

Julie, the blonde, was getting pretty desperate for money. She decided to go to the nicer, richer neighborhoods around town and look for odd jobs as a handy woman.. The first house she came to, a man answered the door and told Julie, "Yeah, I have a job for you. How would you like to paint the porch?"

"Sure that sounds great!" said Julie. "Well, how much do you want me to pay you?" asked the man. "Is fifty bucks all right?" Julie asked. "Yeah, great. You'll find the pain and ladders you'll need in the garage."

The man went back into his house to his wife who had been listening. "Fifty bucks! Does she know the porch goes all the way around the house?" asked the wife. "Well, she must, she was standing right on it!" her husband replied.

About 45 minutes later, Julie knocked on the door. "I'm all finished," she told the surprised homeowner. The man was amazed. "You painted the whole porch?" "Yeah," Julie replied, "I even had some paint left, so I put on two coats!"

The man reached into his wallet to pay Julie. "Oh, and by the way," said Julie, "That's not a Porsche, it's a Ferrari."
