Welcome Fellow Race fans!
My name is Danny and I'm glad you stopped by to read my short story.
I am not a writer, nor am I a reporter of any sort. I'm just like most of you.....a
"True Down To Earth Race Fan".
As some of you may notice, I am no Wizard at publishing home pages either. So bare with me and maybe, just maybe, you can over look the designing styles of this page. Keep in mind, I'm just a country boy here, trying to share a story.
You are the "RACE
FAN" to pass through here!
How it all started.....
I first learned of nascar racing in 1972. That is the year my parents moved us to Martinsville Virginia. At the time I had never heard anything about nascar racing and was still in highschool.
One Friday, our automachanics class spent the day at the Martinsville Speedway, for the"Time trials", better known today as "Qualifing". Now for someone whom was born with grease under his fingernails, this "Winston-Cup"thing was right up my alley. Needless to say I really enjoyed myself.
Now there is a second reason
why I was so attracted to the sport. My parents just happened to own a
new 1972 Monte Carlo. Gold in color, which looked ever so much like
the #12, Coca-Cola
Monte Carlo driven by the great Bobby Allison.
Now Bobby may not have won the race that following Sunday........But he did win a "Life Time Fan" here in Martinsville, Virginia!!
As time flew by, along came what I believe could have been one of the best drivers in Nascar, Davey Allison. Sure I say this now, but I also said it in his rookie year. He was an Allison! He had racing in his blood, knew where he wanted to be in life and the guy could drive the wheels off of that #28 car!!
I wanted to meet him!!!
So as I walked out onto the field, there right in front of me stood Davey. As I approached him he turned towards me, smiled and said "hi". I praised him on a good game and he thanked me and asked if I played softball. I was shocked, almost speechless! The man was carring on a conversation with a fan! ( You're lucky to get one to acknowledge you exist better lone have a conversation with you ). But that night we talked about softball and how we both enjoyed playing the game. I asked about his dad, he told me he had been there earlier, but had gone back to the motel room. I could tell that just the thought of me asking about his dad, pleased him. There is no doubt that he was proud of his dad!
