The Word of God

Footnotes are comments I have added myself, long after leaving. Most of this study seems pretty basic; it is intended to establist trust, and often "teachability."

2 Timothy 3:16-17
  • All Scripture is God-breathed (from God, not from people)
  • It is also useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training.
  • rebuking = strong correcting
  • useful so that man is equipped for every good work
Hebrews 4:12-12
  • Word of God is living and active.
  • Sharper than any double-edged sword -> useful for cutting sin out of our lives (just like removing cancer)(1)
  • We have to give an account of our lives; we don't know when this will happen.
1 Timothy 4:16
  • Watch your life and doctorine closely.
  • Neither is more important; an airplane with one wing will not fly.(2)
  • You will save both yourself and your hearers.
2 Peter 1:20-21
  • No prophesy ever came about because of that prophet's own interpretation.(3)
  • Prophets were carried along by the Holy Spirit, inspired by God.
John 12:42-48
  • Word of God will judge all of us. Jesus did not come to judge the world.
  • We are to choose how we want to live.
  • The Bible is the ultimate standard for our lives!

Footnotes

1. This statement is a non sequitur. The verse cited describes the ability of God to see into every detail of our lives, but makes no mention of the Word actually cutting sin out of one's life.

2. As well as being a non sequitur, this statement demonstrates a degree of ignorance in aeronautical engineering. Several airplanes with only one wing have successfully been built and flown; the Northrup B-2 Black Knight stealth bomber is perhaps the best known. Even a truly asymetrical plane with the wing located on one side of the fuselage could be made to fly; it's just a matter of balancing the lift and weight carefully.

3. Others have reported the ICC using this verse to claim there is no private interpretation of Scripture, and it appears in the official version on the ICC's website. I don't recall them telling me this.

4. This fails to explain why someone who already believes Jesus is the Christ needs to read this particular book. It appears a certain degree of presumption is built into the study series.
