Necar 3
Second German Television ZDF yesterday night highlighted
the presentation of another new Mercedes car at the International Motor
Show (IAA) at Frankfurt, Germany.
Mercedes` Chairman Mr. Juergen Schrempp presented the
Necar 3, a car powered by fuel cell and with an A-Class body. Mr. Schrempp
pointed out that Mercedes-Benz wants to be the first car manufacturer to
have a car powered by fuel cell ready for sale. He said he thinks sale
to start around the year 2005. (End of TV report from October 1998)
Personal comment by MBEP webmaster:
Only some years ago the very first experimental Mercedes
powered by fuel cell was a MB series 100 van. Its cargo space was completely
filled with the fuell cell technique. It was superseded by Necar 2, which
was a MB Vito, a slightly smaller van where all the technique was integrated
into a special bulky roof allowing the interior to remain unchanged and
so giving room for up to eight passengers. The fuel cell generates electrical
power and there is no exhaust emissions at all but only pure water (WATER!).
With China growing economically and the former eastern block in Europe
it is expected to have as many as up to 100 million cars within the next
20 or so years in China only. Imagining the environmental damage done by
an additional 100 million cars it is not very difficult to realize the
advantage of having cars powered by fuel cell.
