The gods, the humans, and the warders, all three are descended from The Brahma. They were living with Her for a time as students, learning the secrets of living.

The gods said to The Brahma, "Teach us, Mentor, that we may live well."

So, in a reply Brahma uttered one syllable, "DA!" Then Brahma asked the gods, "Have you understood?"

"Yes," They declared, "we have understood. You have said to us, 'Damayata (be self controlled).'"

"Very good, you have under stood."

Then the humans said to The Brahman, "Teach us, Mentor, that we may live well."

So, in a reply Brahma uttered one syllable, "DA!" Then Brahma asked the gods, "Have you understood?"

"Yes," They declared, "we have understood. You have said to us, 'Datta (be charitable).'"

"Very good, you have under stood."

Then the warders said to Brahma, "Teach us, Mentor, that we may live well."

So, in a reply Brahma uttered one syllable, "DA!" Then Brahma asked the warders, "Have you understood?"

"Yes," They declared, "we have understood. You have said to us, 'Dayadhwam (be compassionate).'"

"Very good, you have under stood."

"You have all understood well. Be self controlled. Be charitable. Be compassionate." And so it is that as the storm clouds roll by they toll to remind us.
