HTML Characters

This is a list of HTML generated characters. Sometimes the use of these characters is preferred, and sometime necessary. As you code your page, you will need to use these extended characters for letters and symbols you do not find on your key board. Sometimes, as in the case of characters used in html coding, you will need to use these codes to keep the program from getting confused.

If you were to write a sentence in Spanish, you would do this. First, code the tag for that sentence to identify the language, in this case, that would be lang=EA for American Spanish, or ES for European Spanish. Then write your statement as such:

¡Cáspita! ¿Quién est el Presidente de Estados Unidos?

Many browsers would get confused unless you could render them with these codes. Enter the code with an &# the number at the left of the row, then the number and the top of the column, then a semicolon (;). Remember to escape the code with that; or you may get a surprise. The sentence at the begining of this paragraph was built with this code:

The codes labeled as NA are machine specific, and will not be rendered. Those codes with a box in the cell are not yet rendered by the ISO for anything. There is an extra benefit. If you are using a Widows® Operating System, you can dial in the characters not available on your key board, up to 255. Just press and hold the Alt key while you press the 0+ (number zero plus) the other digits, then release the Alt key. Voila! you have your extended characters. Sorry, this will not work for characters higher than 255, yet.

As another benefit, you may see what a font has to offer you. Open the code source for this page. (You might want to rename it.) Go into the header, between the Style tags you will see a selector called, td. Go to the property 'font-family' and highlight the value 'Arial'. Then, type in the font name of the font you want to see. Make sure, that if there are spaces in the name, that it is inside quotes. Then save and refresh your browser, and Voila! This will only work if you have the font installed on your system. Have fun!
