Sigmund Freud (1895)

Stages of Psycho-Sexual development through Sensory Development.

Freud is considered to be the founder of modern psychology. His theories are either favored, modified, or argued against, and ultimately most modern theories are traced back to him. Freud’s psychosexual theory of the mind’s development is within the context of the body‘s sensual development. The ortho-sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are developing, drawing the mind‘s focus away from the enteric nervous system (a primitive ganglia of nerves that line the alimentary canal, that was once the primary brain within the less differentiated structures of tubular animals).

When born, the human infant is Immature in many respects. The central nervous system is underdeveloped to allow the cranium to pass through the natal canal. During the first year of development the human infant is doing just that, post-partum gestation, mostly during the first six months. It is best that bright lights and loud sounds be kept away from the infant. Sensory overload can “break” that sensory system, limiting that system‘s development. Soft music and gentle visual stimulation can, however, be beneficial. These will bring optimal development through stimulation, and so help “Fine tune” the system. This will also stimulate scientific curiosity, which is the master of intelligence.
