One of the best things we can do with our children is anything. This recipie has the great potential of teaching so many tactile skills.

This recipie is best when the children help. This gives them a sence of accomplishmen, participation, and some disition making skills. Also, by having them mix this, it will keep your hands clean.

Play Dough
2 ¼ cups non-self-rising wheat flour 1   cup salt
1   tbls. powdered alum 4   tbls. vegetable oil
1 ½ cups boiling water   food coloring or poster paints
  1. Combine flour, salt and alum in a bowl. Add vegetable oil.
  2. If you plan on using food coloring, add this to the water. Let the child choose how much.
  3. Stir in warm water. Stir vigorously with a large spoon or children's hands until mixture holds together.
  4. Knead the dough until it is smooth.
  5. Divide the dough into several lumps.

Makes about 3 cups.

How to Use It:

Model as with any clay. Objects will dry to a hard finish if left in the open air. Paint dried pieces with enamel, hyplar, or tempera.

Stored in an airtight container, play dough will keep a long time.
