Nova Scotia
Was one of the first colonies to join the Canadian Confederation to form the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867, along with New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec. John A. Macdonald becomes Canada's first Prime Minister on this day.
Nova Scotia is known as Canada's Ocean Playground. For many Nova Scotians the sea is their main source of livelihood and leisure. It was the abundant fishery that drew settlers to the area more than 200 years ago. Today you will see the star shaped citadel dominating the old city of Halifax, neatly painted fisherman's cottages nestling safe from the moody Atlantic and fresh red apples from the orchards of the Annapolis Valley. Nova Scotia is New Scotland, but its early settlers included French speaking Acadians, New Englanders and the Germans who founded Lunenburg. Loyalist Americans fled to Nova Scotia to escape the American Revolution. Each group of settlers had a special contribution to make, and in the 19th century they combined to build great windjammers and sail them to the ends of the earth.
