Three time Grammy Award winning recording artist
and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan was to
receive the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Visionary
Award from New York Governor, George E. Pataki on
July 14.
This award marks the 150th anniversary of the
first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls,
N.Y.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a visionary who
penned the Declaration of Sentiments which laid
the foundation for women's equality. The
Governor's Commission Honoring the Achievements
of Women felt that Sarah McLachlan's creation of
Lilith Fair was a visionary venture, that
promoted fellow female artists making her the
epitome for this prestigious award.
Lilith Fair was the first ever all women
concert event tour that provided a forum for
female performers to share audiences, collaborate
musically and raise contemporary issues effecting
all generations of women. The festival tour
flourished into one of the most successful
concert tours of the last two years. Lilith Fair
is currently on a nationwide 56 date festival
tour featuring some of the top and up and coming
contemporary female artists.
Later that same evening, Arista Records
President, Clive Davis was to host a party for
Sarah and present her with a plaque commemorating
sales exceeding three million albums of
Surfacing. The Surfacing album produced three
Grammy awards for McLachlan earlier this year.
Sarah McLachlan born in Halifax, Nova Scotia
Canada in 1968 has amassed career album records
sales exceeding seven million units.
