Scene 4

Poolside at the Nacional the following morning. LINDA and CHICK, in bathing apparel, are sunning themselves. BELLBOY enters with Adeline's steamer trunk followed by a very forlorn ADELINE. LINDA rises, goes to her.
LINDA
You're not leaving?

ADELINE

I fear so.

LINDA

But the boat doesn't leave until this evening.

ADELINE

I'm not taking the boat. There's a plane at noon.

LINDA

Poor Miss Adams.

ADELINE

Why does everybody say "poor Miss Adams" like that? I'm not "poor Miss Adams".

LINDA

I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. I meant…

ADELINE

I know what you meant.

LINDA

I couldn't help overhearing your conversation last night. Mostly because I was trying so damned hard to overhear it.

ADELINE

I know that, too.

LINDA

Don't you recognize the game? You don't, do you?

ADELINE

What game?

LINDA

It's like placing a loaf of freshly baked bread in front of your nose and then withdrawing it. So you'll want it that much more.

ADELINE

Really, my dear. I could not care less.

LINDA

If you only believed that…

ADELINE

I'm much too old for this kind of thing. And you have no idea, for all your cleverness, why I came to Havana.

LINDA

Please stay. It's none of my business, but he'll come back. They always do.

ADELINE

I'm afraid I'll be late for my plane. Goodbye, Miss Slabey. Perhaps we'll meet in Florida. (As SHE turns and begins to follow BELLBOY, ARMANDO rushes on from the left.)
ARMANDO
Beautiful lady. I have been ringing your room. They said you checked out.

ADELINE

I…I have an important…

ARMANDO

Back to London so soon? But you cannot!

ADELINE

But I…

ARMANDO

                                                        (to Bellboy)
Vaya con el equpiaje al curato del señorita. Miss Adams will have lunch with me. (Again "A World with Two Moons" builds in the background, only this time with romantic joy.)
