Congratulations to Laura Josselyn!
Our February, 2000 winner for the best Valentine poem.

      Seven Hundred Roses

She gave back all the roses
one for each and every one
      he touched her with.
And a tear for each warm smile
      he brought to her face
once fresh and alive with the
radiance that love shines upon the flesh.
Now a worn and weathered mask
      that she could hide within.
A much safer place to be
without pitiful stares of the tragic beauty
now that all that she had lived for is lost.
      She kept each faded Valentine
he ever gave her fastened in a bright
      red satin ribbon that adorned
her chestnut hair the night they met.
      On this cold mid-February morning
      she carefully placed each one
around his grave amidst the roses.
A gesture of Love so profound,
wanting him, even in death, to be
surrounded in as much love as he
had always surrounded her heart in.
She gave back all the roses,
      dried with loving care and
      pressed into books throughout
      their 50 years together.
      Seven hundred roses,
a dozen for each and every
      Birthday and Valentines Day
and a few more along the way
      Simply to say......

      I love you.
