Entered French films in 1939, following drama studies at the Paris Conservatoire, and gradually developed from bits and light youth roles into one of the principal leads of the French cinema, typically appearing in sensitive, literate, man-of-the-world roles. He also directed one film, Les Dents Longues (1953), and is a published poet of some critical esteem.
