Luella Large Grandma   Grandpa 1     Grapndpa 2

This is my grandmother Luella's high school graduation portrait made in 1908. To see the entire image, just click.

L uella's family was from Norway. They emigrated to the United States of America and settled in Minnasota. Luella graduated from college in the 1910s. Quite a feat for a woman at the turn of the century. She taught homemaking before marrying. Her husband was the county sherif and she fed the prisioners. She raised three wonderful children who now have their own children and darling grandchildren. She was gentle, clever, fun and energetic.

Luella sewed her families' clothes, make rugs from wool scraps and quilts from cotton scraps. She canned fruits and vegetables that she and her husband grew. She made her own soap. She kept a pot of hot oil on the stove to make us fresh donuts and kept a drawer of powdered sugar full for us to dip them in. Double yummy. She even taught me how to sew button holes by hand when she was nearly blind. She loved to laugh. Luella passed on to heaven the year I turned 21. I miss her still.

The original image is on embossed sepia paper, mounted on decorative cardboard.
I scanned it in photoshop, handcolored and enhanced the image to remove the embossed texture of the paper.

Luella's dress is handmade of French Lawn, hand embroidered and pierced, and trimmed in handmade lace. She is holding a bouquet of dried roses.
